LOS LUNAS, N.M. – On Sunday, the West Texas A&M softball team fell to Fort Lewis in the Lady Buffs' final game of the South Central Regional Challenge, 5-2. With their first loss of the season, the Lady Buffs move to 4-1 overall.
After two and a half scoreless innings, Fort Lewis struck first in the bottom of the third. After
Emilee Boyer forced a groundout from the leadoff hitter, three straight singles from Fort Lewis loaded the bases. A fourth consecutive single scored the game's first run. The Skyhawks took full advantage of the situation as Natalie Rodman tripled down the line to clear the bases. Fort Lewis added its fifth run in the inning when the next batter grounded out to short.
It wasn't until the fifth inning before WT scored its first run.
Megan Guericke started the inning with a single up the middle before
Halie Stoneking lined out to first base. With one out,
Lauren Granger also sent a single up the middle. An RBI double from Boyer brought in the Lady Buffs first run of the game, bringing the score to 5-1. A walk from
Diana Murtha loaded the bases with two outs, extending the inning. Fort Lewis escaped the inning as Aimee Shanks got
Madison Johnson to line out.
With a last chance to tie the game or take the lead, the Lady Buffs opened the seventh inning with back-to-back infield singles from Granger and
Brittni Rufus. Facing a four-run deficit, Boyer hit a hard groundball but right to Fort Lewis pitcher Shanks. Shanks forced out Granger at third, but the Skyhawk defense couldn't complete the double play. In Murtha's at bat, Rufus moved up a base by stealing third. Murtha grounded one back to second to second but putting WT on two outs. Down to one out, Johnson laced one right back up the middle where the ball deflected off the second baseman's glove. Unfortunately for the Lady Buffs, the deflection went right to second base where Alex Tenorio gathered and completed the play.
WT returns home to open its home schedule with the WT Invitational at Schaeffer Park. WT will face CSU Pueblo, Fort Lewis, and UC-Colorado Springs.
