CANYON, Texas – The #19 Buffaloes of West Texas A&M registered another walkoff win on Sunday afternoon as a
Zak Betancourt three-run homerun in the bottom of the ninth clinched a Lone Star Conference series victory over the St. Edward's Hilltoppers at Wilder Park in Canyon.
The Hilltoppers started off the scoring in the top of the second inning as Ty Murray singled thru the left side with runners on the corners and two outs to plate Trevor Sebek for the 1-0 lead. SEU added to their lead in the third as Davis Drewek singled drew an RBI walk with the bases loaded and two outs to score Dillon Flores to make it 2-0.
The Buffs looked to cut into the lead in the home half of the sixth as
Landon Gaber and
Paul Wittmann started the frame with singles followed by an
Elijah Batista sac bunt and a
Glenn Noronha sac fly to center that plated Gaber to make it 2-1.
SEU answered in the top of the seventh on a Conner Cox RBI double to left with one out to score Kyler Kerlin for the 3-2 lead. WT would respond in the home half as
Kory Schmidt lifted a sac fly to the wall in right to score
Kyle Micklus followed by a two-run homerun to right center by
Dylan Fesperman for the 4-3 lead.
The Hilltoppers retook the lead in the top of the ninth as Weston Symes tripled to the wall in center to drive in Murray, the relay throw to third would hit Symes and skip to the dugout to give SEU the 5-4 lead.
WT wouldn't go down without a fight as Fesperman singled to start the bottom half followed by a Gaber sac bunt and a Wittmann walk, the Buffs would walk it off for the second time in the series as Betancourt lifted a three-run shot down the right field line in his first at-bat of the season for the 7-5 win.
Douglas Rojas picked up the win (3-0) for the Buffs, allowing no runs on no hits with no walks and a strikeout in his 0.2 innings of relief.
The Buffs continue their homestand next weekend as they welcome the Drury Panthers to Wilder Park for a pair of non-conference contests along with a Sunday afternoon exhibition.
