CANYON. Texas – The West Texas A&M Buffaloes ended their 2024 season on Saturday night in San Angelo, Texas as the fell to the Lone Star Conference Champion Rams of Angelo State, 56-19 at LeGrand Stadium at 1
st Community Credit Union Field.
The Buffaloes jumped out to a quick lead in San Angelo as the defense forced a turnover on the first play of the game,
JT Cavender forced a fumble that was recovered by
Josh Beaird to setup a three-play drive as
Kanon Gibson found the end zone from three yards out for a 7-0 lead.
Angelo State settled in after the kickoff as they marched 75 yards on eight plays finished off by a Corey Sandolph 33-yard touchdown pass from Braeden Fuller to tie the game at 7-7. A West Texas A&M punt setup another Angelo State scoring drive as Fuller broke loose from 80 yards out for the 14-7 lead. WT would punt again on their next possession as the Rams took advantage with a Fuller 15-yard pass to Cameron Dischler to start the second quarter for the 21-7 advantage.
The Buffs made a big play of their own on their next drive as Gibson connected with
Tucker Swoboda on a 67-yard completion followed by a
Brennan Ray five-yard touchdown reception to cut the ASU lead to 21-13. Angelo State wasted little time answering back as Fuller found Kyle Bradford from 53 yards out to extend their lead to 28-13.
The Rams continued their big first half on their next possession as they marched 49 yards on seven plays as Fuller called his own number and found the end zone for the second time at 35-13. WT cut into the lead right before halftime as Gibson dropped a dime into the corner of the end zone to Swoboda to make it 35-19.
Angelo State used a big defensive play to extend their lead to start the second half as Andrew Pitts picked off a Gibson pass and returned it 45 yards for a touchdown at 42-19. WT stalled on their next drive as a punt setup a six play drive finished off by a 23-yard score on the ground by Fuller for the 49-19 lead. ASU added to their lead on the next possession as they went 66 yards on 11 plays capped off by a Dischler 16-yard touchdown pass from Fuller to make it 56-19.
Gibson finished the night completing 9-of-20 passes for 119 yards and two touchdowns along with an interception,
Tre'Jon Henderson ended his collegiate career with 13 rushes for 42 yards while Swoboda caught four passes for 103 yards and a score.
Defensively,
JT Cavender concluded one of the best careers in program history as the Midlothian product had nine total tackles (four solo) with one coming for a loss to go along with a forced fumble. Zach Schaleger registered eight tackles in his final collegiate game followed by
Jamel Acosta-Lewis and Preston Stezsewski with four each. Cavender ran his career tackle total to 350 for the third most by a Buffalo since 2000 to pass former All-American Jared Brock.
