CANYON, Texas – The Buffaloes of West Texas A&M picked up a Homecoming victory for the seventh straight year on Saturday night as they compiled 632 yards of total offense on their way to a 42-17 Lone Star Conference victory over the Western New Mexico Mustangs in front of over 8,000 fans at Bain-Schaeffer Buffalo Stadium in Canyon.
The Buffs didn't waste any time getting on the scoreboard as
Kanon Gibson found
Zorian Stanton from 59-yards out on the second play of the game followed by a
James Ingham completed pass to
Josh Beaird for the two-point conversion for the early 8-0 lead. WNMU responded on their first possession as a short field turned into points on a Josh Magana four-yard rush to make it 8-7.
WT added to their lead on their next possession as they marched 87-yards on 10 plays capped off by a 13-yard touchdown grab by
Tucker Swoboda for the 14-7 lead. The Buffs made a big play on defense with the Mustangs driving as
Cam Manahan picked off a WNMU pass in the endzone to give the Buffs the ball back late in the first quarter, WT would turn it into points as a Gibson found Stanton from 13-yards out for the 21-7 lead.
The Mustangs cut into the lead early in the second quarter as a 12-play drive was finished off by a Zach Gordon 31-yard field goal. WNMU put together another long drive on their next possession as 64-yard drive spanned seven plays capped off by a Magana 29-yard touchdown pass to Demarion Postell made it 21-17 headed into the locker room.
The Buffalo defense came up with a big stop as the Mustangs were marching to take the lead as
JT Cavender chased down Magana in the backfield on fourth and short to give WT the ball back, the Buffs would finish off an 11-play drive with a Gibson two-yard keeper for the 28-17 lead. The Buffs would add to their lead on the next possession as Gibson found
TJ Moore Jr. on the first play of the drive from 46-yards out to make it 35-17.
WT continued their big third quarter on their next drive as Gibson placed a deep ball perfectly in the hands of Swoboda racing down the sidelines from 72-yards out to give WT the 42-17 lead.
Gibson finished the night completing 19-of-27 passes for 374 yards and five touchdowns while also carrying the ball 10 times for 36 yards and a score, the sophomore becomes the first WT quarterback to throw for atleast five touchdowns since Ben Arbuckle tossed six scores against Oklahoma Panhandle State on September 15, 2016.
Stanton had a team-leading eight catches for 187 yards and a pair of touchdowns while Swoboda caught three balls for 93 yards and two scores of his own.
Tre'Jon Henderson carried the ball 13 times for 105 yards. Defensively, Cavender was all over the field for the Buffs as the senior had 13 total tackles (eight solo) with three of them coming for a loss.
The Buffs hit the road next Saturday as they make the short drive down Highway 60 for the 36
th edition of the Wagon Wheel Game against the Eastern New Mexico Greyhounds, kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m. CT at Steve Loy Family Foundation Stadium in Portales, New Mexico. ENMU fell on the road at Western Oregon on Saturday afternoon, 49-20.
