Lady Buffs End Scoreless with Dustdevils

CANYON, Texas – Despite a combined 31 shots and 15 shots on goal, the West Texas A&M women's soccer team ended scoreless with the Texas A&M International Dustdevils. The Lady Buffs' record moves to 1-2-4 overall and 0-0-2 in Lone Star Conference play while the Dustdevils moved to 2-1-3 overall and 0-0-1 in LSC action.

WT took the opening kickoff down the field, looking to take the advantage early. 70 seconds into the game, Alexsis Villarreal took a shot from outside the 18-yard box that froze the Texas A&M International goalkeeper. The shot couldn't find the back of the net as Villarreal's attempt nailed the crossbar. Villarreal found another scoring chance in the 10th minute when the junior defender ripped a shot. Just before the ball crossed the line, the Dustdevils' Fabiana Solano made the save to keep the game scoreless. TAMIU countered the Lady Buffs' attack with an attack of its own in the 17th minute. After an initial shot got blocked by the WT defense, the follow up attempt went high and struck the crossbar. Although each team had chances to score in the first half, the game remained scoreless.

Although the Lady Buffs controlled possession to open the second half, Texas A&M international found the scoring chances. As the second half went on, Heelan continued to be tested by the Dustdevils as five of their first six shots found the target. It wasn't until the 75th minute when the Lady Buffs registered their first shot of the second half. TAMIU found an open look at goal as Krysan St. Louis found open space inside the WT penalty box. St. Louis took a shot but didn't get a good foot on it as Heelan converted the save. The Lady Buffs caught a break with two and a half minutes to play as the Dustdevils sent a service into the box. Heelan came off her line to control the ball but had knocked free. As TAMIU tried to put the rebound in the back of the net but saw the attempt hit the crossbar. When the Dustdevils went for the second rebound the offside flag went up and settled the action. As the clock went under a minute to play, the Lady Buffs made a final surge at the goal. WT couldn't get a shot off in time as time expired.

WT returns to conference play on Wednesday, Oct. 4 as the Lady Buffs hit the road to play UT Permian Basin. Kickoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. in Odessa.
