Lady Buffs Open LSC Play with Draw

OKLAHOMA CITY – Going on the road for its Lone Star Conference opener, the West Texas A&M women's soccer team played to a 1-1 draw with the Oklahoma Christian Eagles. The Lady Buffs move their record to 1-2-3 overall and 0-0-1 in Lone Star Conference play while the Eagles move to 4-0-2 and 0-0-1 in LSC action.

WT found the game's first scoring opportunity in the eighth minute when Ashley Silvestre took a shot from outside the box. Silvestre tried to sneak the ball inside the near post, but Oklahoma Christian goalkeeper Breanna Wooten made the save. A few minutes later, the Lady Buffs cashed in off the foot of Alexsis Villarreal. After gaining possession in the middle of the field, Villarreal sent a shot from 40 yards out towards the goal. Villarreal's shot caught Wooten a step too far off her line, landing the long strike into the net. Oklahoma Christian looked to have tied the game up in the 18th minute when a ball found its way into the back of the net. Although the Eagles started to celebrate the goal, the referee waved off the goal due to an Oklahoma Christian foul to keep the Lady Buffs ahead by one. The Eagles eventually tied the game in the 23rd minute when Oklahoma Christian sent a ball into the box. After the ball bounced around, Raquel Fanelli headed the ball into the back of the net. The remainder of the first half went the distance without a score change.

Early in the second half, the Eagles found a free kick opportunity. The Lady Buff defense held strong as the WT wall blocked the shot and cleared the danger. Both teams took turns advancing up the field and finding scoring opportunities. Despite multiple chances from both sides, neither team could find a definitive advantage. The Eagles looked to have taken the lead on a shot from outside the box, but the opportunity struck the crossbar and went out. As the game went under five minutes to play, the Eagles made one final push for a game winner. Reagan Heelan and the Lady Buffs stood tall as Healan made a crucial save with 30 seconds to play.

The Lady Buffs return to Canyon for a conference matchup with Texas A&M International. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 23.
