DURANGO, Colo. – Facing off with the No. 17-ranked Colorado Mesa Mavericks, the West Texas A&M soccer team couldn't pull off an upset as the Mavericks netted a second-half goal to win, 2-1. The Lady Buffs fall to 1-2-2 on the season while Colorado Mesa stays undefeated at 5-0 overall.
Both teams used the opening minutes of the game to scout and formulate a plan of attack. The Mavericks registered the game's first shot off the foot of Mikayla Eccher. Eccher's shot couldn't find the back of the net before
Reagan Heelan stopped the scoring chance. As the clock approached 15 minutes to play in the first half, Eccher placed another shot on frame. Heelan stopped Eccher's initial shot but couldn't stop the rebound as Colorado Mesa took the lead. The Mavericks continued to pressure Heelan and the Lady Buff defense, but WT held firm. Just before the half,
Sophie Osman garnered the Lady Buffs first look at goal in the 43
rd minute. Osman placed a shot on goal, but Colorado Mesa goalkeeper Keely Wieczorek made the save. After 45 minutes of play, the Mavericks held a 1-0 advantage on the scoreboard along with a 7-1 lead in shots and 5-1 advantage in shots on goal.
Despite the stark difference on the scoresheet in the first half, the Lady Buffs didn't let the score shake their determination. Off the opening kickoff in the second half, WT gained possession after a Maverick throw in. After a throw in of their own, the Lady Buffs pushed up the field where
Ashley Silvestre tied the game. Silvestre took on defender into box and tucked a left-footed shot past Wieczorek's reach. The Mavericks regained the advantage in the 70
th minute after a corner kick. Haley Klsner's service into the box went to the feet of Sauvelyne Randel where Randel sent a shot over the head of Heelan from 20 yards out. The second-half goal from Randel proved to be the difference in the game as the Mavericks held off the Lady Buffs.
WT starts Lone Star Conference play against Oklahoma Christian on Wednesday, Sept. 20. Kickoff is slated for 4:30 p.m. at the Eagle Soccer Field in Oklahoma City.
