Lady Buffs Fall on the Road

DURANGO, Colo. – The West Texas A&M women's soccer team couldn't come away with a road victory as the Fort Lewis Skyhawks shut out the Lady Buffs, 2-0. The loss drops WT to 1-1-2 overall on the season.

Fort Lewis garnered the game's first scoring opportunities by sending a flurry of shots towards Reagan Heelan. Heelan saved each opportunity, denying the Skyhawks three times in a 90 second span. The Lady Buffs couldn't find chances in the first half before Bailey Murray registered WT's first shot 26 minutes into the game. After a goal kick, Fort Lewis went the length of the field after Amber Otts played a ball over the Lady Buff back line. Aubrey Swindle beat Heelan to the ball and netted the game's opening goal. Heelan didn't let the goal bother her as she continued to make saves throughout the remainder of the first half. After 45 minutes of play, the Skyhawks held a 15-1 lead in shots as Healan made seven saves.

Fort Lewis pushed its advantage to two less than a minute into the second half after WT committed a foul inside the box. Gabi Meraz-Fishbein stepped up and converted the penalty kick to extend the advantage to two goals. Late in the second half, the Lady Buffs started to advance up the field and find shots of their own. Ashley Silvestre found a shot in the 77th minute but watched her attempt go wide. With less than five minutes to play, Sydney Martin placed a shot on goal, but FLC goalkeeper Riley Bravin kept WT off the scoreboard. Kyndahl Britton looked to get the Lady Buffs on the board in the closing seconds but had her shot saved by Bravin.

WT looks to bounce back on Saturday as the Lady Buffs take on No. 17-ranked Colorado Mesa. Kickoff is slated for 2 p.m. Central at FLC Dirks Field.
