Lady Buffs Open Season with 1-1 Draw

PUEBLO, Colo. – The West Texas A&M soccer team opened the 2023 season with a 1-1 draw in Pueblo, Colo. on Thursday night. The Lady Buffs took the lead in the second half before the ThunderWolves leveled the score and forced a draw.

The match started as a defensive battle from the opening kick with neither team gaining a definitive advantage. A WT takeaway at the 24-minute mark gave way to an odd-numbered attack for the Lady Buffs. With an attacker bearing down on goal, the ThunderWolves' defense locked down and forced an errant shot. CSU Pueblo worked their way up the field with less than 10 minutes to play in the first half. After WT gave CSU Pueblo a free kick, the ensuing kick went off the head of Yesenia Valdez but into the awaiting arms of Reagan Heelan. The save from Heelan kept the game scoreless into halftime.

10 minutes into the second half, WT came up with another crucial defensive stand, keeping the game knotted at zero. The Lady Buffs turned defense into offense and broke the scoring drought in the 58th minute after CSU Pueblo conceded a free kick in the WT defensive half of the field. After the kick bounced around, Reagan Matacale sent a centering pass across the face of goal, finding Bailey Murray on the back post. The ThunderWolves attempted to tie the game up at one on a header, but Heelan smothered the scoring opportunity. CSU Pueblo didn't let the goal slow its momentum as the ThunderWolves continued to press up the field. After a foul by the Lady Buffs, CSU Pueblo's Jerzie Troost sent the free kick off the underside of the crossbar and into the back of the net. Going back onto the attack, WT drew a free kick of its own with the clock approaching 10 minutes to play. The service into the box approached multiple Lady Buffs but ended with a clearance from the ThunderWolves' back line. WT attempted a final attack in the last minute of the game but watched the shot go into the arms of CSU Pueblo goalkeeper Nicole Genis.

The Lady Buffs return to The Pitch on Sunday, Sept. 10 for their home opener against Adams State. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. in Canyon.
