CANYON, Texas – Hosting Adams State for its home opener, the West Texas A&M women's soccer team couldn't protect a 1-0 halftime lead, eventually tying the Grizzlies 1-1. The Lady Buffs move to 0-0-2 while the Grizzlies move to 0-1-2.
After the opening kick, Adams State found the game's opening scoring chance two and a half minutes into the game. The opportunity off the foot of Nevaeh Clouse went into the awaiting arms of
Reagan Heelan. 35 minutes into the game, WT found its first shot on goal as
Bailey Malone sent an opportunity towards the Grizzlies' goal but watched her shot saved by Ashlyn Bartley. The Lady Buffs wasted no time going onto the attack as
Ashley Silvestre took the ball into the 18-yard box. As the defense closed in on Silvestre, the senior sent a centering pass towards the feet of
Jasmine Gibson. Gibson used one touch and placed the ball into the back of the net for a 1-0 lead going into halftime.
10 minutes into the second half, WT attempted to double its lead. Like their first goal, the Lady Buffs centered a ball to a wide-open Gibson inside the box. The pass came in a little hard for Gibson who couldn't make solid contact with the ball and went straight to Bartley. In the 69
th minute,
Viviana Gomez found a clean look at goal but sent the ball just over the crossbar. WT found scoring opportunities in the 73
rd and 77
th minutes by Gomez and
Reagan Matacale, but Bartley saved both chances. With the clock ticking under 10 minutes to play, Adams State found an equalizer when Tena Colette placed a pass onto the head of Brissa Toribio. Toribio's scoring chance got saved by Heelan, but the follow-up attempt by Karlee Caballero ended up in the back of the net. After the equalizer, the Lady Buffs attempted to take the lead in the final minutes but couldn't find the go-ahead goal.
WT faces a quick turnaround as the Lady Buffs host Southwestern Oklahoma State on Tuesday, Sept. 12 at 5 p.m.
