West Texas A&M Athletics Mourns the Loss of Terry Funk

CANYON, Texas – West Texas A&M Athletics and Buff Nation mourns the loss of former football student-athlete and professional wrestling Hall of Famer Terry Funk who passed away on August 23rd at the age of 79. Funk was inducted into the WTAMU Hall of Champions in 1997.
 
Terry Dee Funk was born June 30, 1944 in Hammond, Indiana to Dory Funk, Sr. and Dorothy Mattlock Funk. He graduated from Canyon High School and attended West Texas State University, where he played football from 1963-65.
 
Funk's 50+ year wrestling career began in 1965 for his father's Western States Sports promotion based in Amarillo. He competed in Japan, the WWE, WCW and ECW, being inducted to the WWE Hall of Fame in 2009. He's also a member of the WCW, NWA and Hardcore wrestling Hall of Fame and the Texas Panhandle Sports Hall of Fame as well.
 
Terry also had a career in film where he was an actor in multiple movies including Road House, Beyond the Mat, Paradise Alley, The Ringer and Over the Top. 
 
Terry and his wife Vicki married at the First Baptist Church on August 14, 1964 while they were students at WTSU. They were able to travel the world with each other, which they loved doing. They spent 54 wonderful years together before she preceded him in death on March 29, 2019.
 
Survivors include his daughters, Stacy Clenney and Brandee Dungan; grandchildren, Daniel Clenney, Champe Clenney, and Bella Dungan; brother, Dory Funk, Jr.; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, a plethora of extended family, and his professional family including wrestlers and fans throughout the world.
 
Memorial services will be 2:00 p.m. Friday, September 1st at Hillside Christian Church, Amarillo West Campus, with Rev. Rick Enns, pastor of the First Methodist Church in Canyon, officiating. The family will receive friends on Thursday, August 31 from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at Brooks Chapel in Canyon. The graveside ceremony will be private.
