CANYON, Texas – West Texas A&M's
Ryan Johnson capped off a pair of Lone Star Conference victories with a walkoff single in the bottom of the seventh inning on Saturday afternoon as the Buffs picked up a pair of victories over the #2 Rams of Angelo State at Wilder Park in Canyon.
The Buffs and Rams conclude the regular season tomorrow afternoon as first pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. on Senior Day at Wilder Park.
GAME ONE
The Rams jumped out to an early lead as Jacob Guerrero lifted a two-run shot the other way to right center field for the 2-0 lead. The Buffs responded in the home half of the frame as
Kory Schmidt doubled to right field with two outs to plate
Adam Becker followed by a
Will Fuenning RBI double and an
Eddy Savoie RBI single to give WT a 3-2 lead.
WT added to their lead in the bottom of the third as
Bryant Bailey grounded out to second base with one out and the bases full to plate Schmidt for the 4-2 advantage. The Buffs used the long ball in the bottom of the fifth to add to their lead as
Bryant Bailey lifted a three-run shot the other way to right field with two outs to make it 7-2.
ASU wouldn't go down without a fight as Tyler Boggs singled thru the left side with one out to plate Jordan Williams before the WT defense locked down and closes out the victory, 7-3.
Isaac Keehn picked up the win (4-3) on the mound for the Buffs, allowing three earned runs on five hits with one walk and three strikeouts in his complete game victory.
GAME TWO
The nightcap saw a pitcher's duel to start the contest as WT's
Maddux Hoaglund and ASU's Aaron Munson took shutouts into the fourth inning. The Rams got on the board on an Austin Beck sacrifice fly to center field that plated Tripp Clark for the 1-0 lead.
The Buffs answered back in the bottom of the frame as Schmidt lined a double down the left field line with one out to plate Becker followed by a Savoie RBI single to right center for the 2-1 lead. The Rams tied up the game in the top of the sixth inning as they scored on an errant throw with one out, ASU loaded the bases with two outs before
Douglas Rojas entered the game and registered a big strikeout to keep it 2-2.
ASU took the lead in the top of the seventh as they manufactured the go-ahead run, a leadoff single by Reese Johnson was followed by a sac bunt and a flyout to the warning track in right field. Clark came thru with another big hit as he singled thru the left side to drive in Johnson for the 3-2 lead.
The Buffs made it interesting in the home half of the seventh as
Dylan Fesperman lifted a ball to right field that was misplayed in the sun followed by a Bailey sacrifice bunt to move pinch-runner Paull Wittmann to third,
Kix Ferrel would reach on a Rams error as Wittman scored from third on an errant throw followed by a groundout before
Ryan Johnson walked it off with a single to center for the 4-3 victory.
Rojas picked up the win (1-3) for the Buffs, allowing one earned run on two hits with no walks and two strikeouts in his 1.1 innings of work.
