CANYON, Texas – West Texas A&M softball needed just four runs and a lights-out performance in the circle by
Emilee Boyer to defeat the Cameron Aggies, 4-0. On the offensive side,
Ruby Salzman cemented herself in the record books as the senior crushed her 65
th career home run to stand alone at second on the program's all-time leader board.
The Lady Buffs scored their first run in the bottom of the second when they took a 1-0 lead.
Madison Johnson tripled to right field on the 10
th pitch of her at bat. The junior lifted a ball towards the right-center gap where the Texas Panhandle wind carried the ball to straightaway right field, banging off the wall. After the hit,
Nikki Warren pinch ran for Johnson while
Gabriella Valforte pinch hit for
Megan Guericke. Valforte made the most of her opportunity when she grounded out to short, bringing in Warren to score.
WT added to its lead an inning later when Salzman doubled to center field. The double was the 55
th in Salzman's career and moved her into sole possession of second place in the Lady Buff record book. Following the double, Boyer helped her cause in the circle when she dropped a single into left field.
For the second inning in a row, Salzman moved herself up the record book when she crushed a two-run home run to left field. The inning started when
Brittni Rufus dropped an infield single down and eventually stole second during
Gabie McConnell's at bat. McConnell would ground out to third but moved Rufus up a base. On an 0-1 count, Salzman took the pitch deep to cap the scoring for the Lady Buffs.
Boyer pitched her fourth complete game and second shutout of the season after scattering two hits and four walks with three strikeouts.
