Costly Errors Doom the Buffaloes in the Series Opener, 7-5

CANYON, Texas – The Buffaloes of West Texas A&M committed five costly errors that led to five unearned runs on Friday night as they dropped the Lone Star Conference series opener to the #2 Angelo State Rams at Wilder Park in Canyon, Texas.

The Rams took advantage of a pair of WT errors with two outs in the top of the first inning as Thomas Cain scored from third on a failed pickoff attempt followed by a Jordan Williams RBI single thru the right side for the 2-0 lead. ASU added to their lead in the top of the second as Kamden Kelton layed down a squeeze bunt to score Justin Harris with one out for the 3-0 lead.

Angelo added to their lead in the top of the third as Jacob Guerrero stole third and scored on an errant WT throw for the 4-0 lead. ASU manufactured another run in the fourth as Kelton layed down his second bunt of the night, this time a sacrifice right in front of the plate to score Williams for the 5-0 lead.

The Buffs got on the board in the home half of the fourth as Kory Schmidt lined a double to the gap in left center with one out as Adam Becker scored all the way from first followed later in the frame by a wild pitch that would score Schmidt to make it 5-2.

WT cut into the lead again in the home half of the fifth as Evan Leibl would score from third on a wild pitch with the bases loaded followed by an Adam Becker RBI single up the middle to cut the lead to 5-4. The Rams responded in the seventh as Tripp Clark doubled to left field with one out to drive in a pair for the 7-4 lead.

The Buffs used the long ball to cut into the lead in the bottom of the eighth inning as Becker lifted a solo homerun down the left field line to start the frame to cut the lead to 7-5.

Gavin Pringle picked up the loss (7-2) for the Buffs, allowing seven runs (two earned) on nine hits with no walks and two strikeouts in his 6.1 innings of work.

The Buffs and Rams continue their series tomorrow afternoon with first pitch of a doubleheader set for 3:00 p.m. in Canyon.
