CANYON, Texas – West Texas A&M softball registered another series sweep against a Lone Star Conference opponent, winning all three games against Texas A&M International. The Lady Buffs finished out the three-game set with an 8-0 win in five innings.
Texas A&M International retired the first two hitters of the WT lineup in the bottom of the first before
Emilee Boyer lined a single into left field. The two-out hits continued as
Diana Murtha ripped a double into the gap.
Madison Johnson scored Murtha a few pitches later when she singled to right field.
The Lady Buffs added to their lead an inning later when
Brittni Rufus dropped a single into right field, moving pinch runner
Nikki Warren to third base. Rufus drew the defense's attention in between first and second to give Warren enough time to sneak home.
WT brought the run-rule into effect in the bottom of the third when the Lady Buffs plated five runs on four hits and two Dustdevil errors. Boyer started the inning by reaching on an error by the TAMIU first baseman. Murtha followed with her second double of the game, scoring Boyer from second. Johnson then flied a routine flyball to right, but a second error in the inning allowed Johnson to reach second base.
Megan Guericke delivered another run for the Lady Buffs as she singled to right field. After a sacrifice bunt from
Julie Guzman scored a run,
Shyanne Sanchez walked to set up Rufus' RBI single up the middle. The Dustdevils went to their bullpen following the base hit where
Gabie McConnell popped out to second base.
Ruby Salzman capped the scoring off with a single into left, scoring Sanchez and giving WT an 8-0 lead.
From that point on, the Lady Buffs added some hits but couldn't scratch across more runs. In the top of the fifth,
Emma Parrish worked a flawless frame to seal the victory.
Kyra Lair received the win after pitching four scoreless innings, striking out six and allowing just two hits.
WT travels down I-27 for a Rivalry on the Range series with No. 10 Lubbock Christian. The top-15 series starts on Friday, Apr. 21 at 2 p.m. The two teams meet the next day for a 1 and 3 p.m. doubleheader.
