No. 14 Lady Buffs Split Tuesday Action with Hilltoppers

AUSTIN – West Texas A&M softball saw its win streak come to an end at 15 games against St. Edward's on Tuesday afternoon. The Lady Buffs slid past the Hilltoppers in game one, 2-1. In game two, Emilee Wilson pitched a no-hitter, but an unearned run in the first inning held up as SEU took game two, 1-0.

The final game of the series is scheduled for 12 p.m. at Dianne Daniels Field in Austin.

THE BASICS
Game 40 Score: West Texas A&M 2, St. Edward's 1
Pitching: (W) Emilee Boyer (13-2); (L) Madison Leamon (5-9); (S) Kyra Lair (2)

The Lady Buffs and Hilltoppers faced off in a pitcher's duel in game one with neither team gaining an edge. WT's luck changed in the top of the fourth when Ruby Salzman and Emilee Boyer drew walks to start the inning. With one out, Salzman stole third and came home to score on an overthrow. The Lady Buffs looked to have tacked on another run on a sacrifice fly, but the runner on third left early and ended the inning. St. Edward's looked to tie the game in the bottom of the fourth when the leadoff hitter struck out but reached on a wild pitch. The next batter for the Hilltoppers laid a sacrifice bunt down but a great defensive effort by the Lady Buffs caught the runner at second.

Despite having a one-run lead, WT went into the fifth inning in search of its first hit. With one out, Julie Guzman lifted her seventh home run of the season to give the Lady Buffs a two-run cushion.

In the bottom of the sixth, St. Edward's placed its first two hitters of the inning base via the walk. Emilee Boyer retired one hitter before passing the reins to Kyra Lair. Lair ended the inning with a pair of strikeouts to escape the pressure. The Hilltoppers attempted to push the game into extras as SEU singled home a run with two outs. With runners on first and second, Lair forced a groundout to Diana Murtha at third base.

THE BASICS
Game 41 Score: St. Edward's 1, West Texas A&M 0
Pitching: (W) Cadie Belle Currie (13-6); (L) Emilee Wilson (5-1)

The Hilltoppers struck first in the bottom of the first inning as the SEU leadoff hitter struck out but reached first on a passed ball. The passed ball came back to bite the Lady Buffs as the next hitter hit a groundball to shortstop. Attempting to turn a double play, Madison Johnson's throw to second was too high, setting up runners on first and third with no outs. The 'Toppers promptly executed a double steal to grab a run off the WT defense.

Batting in the third inning, the Lady Buffs attempted to take the lead after singles from Lauren Granger and Gabie McConnell put runners on first and second with two outs. Salzman stepped to the plate and hammered a ball to center field. As the ball was on its way down, the Hilltoppers' center fielder snagged the ball over her shoulder to end the threat.

In the next inning, Murtha hammered a ball into left field. For the second inning in a row, the SEU defense kept the game tied as the defender made the catch before crashing into the wall.

In the seventh, Boyer started the inning with a single to left field. A flyout and a fielder's choice gave the Hilltoppers two outs in the inning before a strikeout ended the game.

Emilee Wilson went six innings without giving up a hit while walking four and striking out three.
