Buffaloes Clinch the LSC Weekend Series with Arkansas-Fort Smith

CANYON, Texas – The Buffaloes of West Texas A&M used a dominating performance on the mound in the opener followed by a comeback in the nightcap to clinch their Lone Star Conference weekend series with the Arkansas-Fort Smith Lions at Wilder Park.
 
The Buffs and Lions close out their LSC series tomorrow afternoon with first pitch of the finale set for 1:00 p.m. at Wilder Park in Canyon.
 
GAME ONE
The Buffs got on the board in the bottom of the third as Dylan Fesperman and Evan Leibl registered back-to-back ground-rule doubles with one out for the 1-0 lead. The Lions responded in the top of the fourth as Matt Schilling lifted a two-run homerun to center field with one out followed later in the frame by a Brandon Ulmer RBI single to left for the 3-1 lead. 
 
WT answered in the home half of the frame as Will Fuenning doubled to the gap in left center to plate Adam Becker followed by an Eddy Savoie sac fly to score Kory Schmidt, Leibl double double to center with two outs to drive in a pair and make it 5-3. WT added to their lead in the fifth as Ryan Johnson would score from third on a wild pitch with one out to make it 6-3.
 
The Buffs added an insurance run in the home half of the sixth as Leibl drove in his fourth run of the game with a sac fly to left that score Patrick Donovan who started off the frame with a triple for the 7-3 lead. 
 
Nick Marshall picked up the win (6-1) for the Buffs, allowing three earned runs on six hits with three walks and nine strikeouts in the complete game victory. Marshall moves into a tie for fifth on WT's all-time wins list (17) with Justin Kuks (2011-12). 
 
GAME TWO
WT jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the first inning as Savoie drew an RBI walk with the bases loaded and two outs to plate Johnson for the 1-0 lead. UAFS responded in the top of the second as Michael Brinton connected on a leadoff solo shot to right center, the Lions looked to add to their lead later in the inning but Fuenning gunned down the third out at the plate in a 1-1 ballgame.
 
UAFS retook the lead in the top of the third as Ulmer singled thru the left side with one out to drive in a pair followed later in the frame by a Mason Reynolds RBI single, a passed ball would move the runners into scoring position followed by a walk to load the bases as WT made another move to the bullpen. Douglas Rojas entered the game and stranded the bases loaded with a big strikeout to keep it 4-1.
 
The Buffs responded in the bottom of the fifth as Kory Schmidt started the frame with a solo homerun to right center followed by a Savoie sac fly to right that score Fuenning to make it 4-3. WT took the lead in the bottom of the sixth as Becker doubled to the gap in right center to drive in a pair followed by a Schmidt RBI single to left before Patrick Donovan put the game away with a two-run shot to right for the 8-4 lead.
 
Reese Miller picked up the win (3-2) for the Buffs, allowing no runs on two hits with one walk and four strikeouts over the final two innings of work.
