CANYON, Texas – Senior
Ruby Salzman registered four runs batted in while hitting two home runs in the West Texas A&M softball team's 9-0 victory over Midwestern State on Tuesday night. With the win, the Lady Buffs improved to 16-9 on the season and 7-3 in Lone Star Conference play.
In the top of the first, the Mustangs were in prime position to take the lead after a leadoff single and a double to left.
Emilee Boyer didn't let the two hits sway her as the freshman pitcher struck out the side to end the inning. Coming to the plate in the bottom half of the inning, Salzman started the scoring quickly with a solo shot to left-center field with one out. The Northridge, Calif. native came close to sending a ball out of the park earlier in her at bat, but the ball hooked before the foul pole. A few pitches later Salzman straightened her hit out as it left the ballpark for her 56
th career home run.
The Lady Buffs added to their lead in the second as
Julie Guzman singled and
Braeland Booth doubled to start the inning. After the base hit by Booth,
Malaya Delfin came in to pinch run for her. Delfin promptly stole second as Guzman came home on an errant throw to second. After a lineout moved Delfin to third,
Gabie McConnell singled her in to put the WT lead at three. Following a pitching change by Midwestern State, McConnell stole second before swiping third. McConnell's stolen bases allowed the freshman to come home on Salzman's sacrifice fly to center field.
WT posted another three-run inning in the fourth as a
Brittni Rufus double led to Salzman's second home run of the night. The two-run shot to center moved Salzman past Lady Buff great Kim LeComte on the program's home run leaderboard.
The Lady Buffs ended the game in the fifth as
Megan Guericke doubled to start the inning. After a pop out to first base,
Riley Stiner sent her first home run in Maroon and White over the left-field wall to end the game.
Boyer recorded the win in the circle as she tossed five innings of shutout softball, allowing four hits and striking out seven.
