CANYON, Texas – The Buffaloes of West Texas A&M battled back from an early deficit in the opener before dropping Saturday's nightcap to split doubleheader action against the Eastern New Mexico Greyhounds at Wilder Park during Lone Star Conference action in Canyon.
The Buffs and Greyhounds close out the series tomorrow afternoon, first pitch of the finale is set for 1:00 p.m. at Wilder Park.
GAME ONE
The Hounds took an early lead in the top of the first inning as Nick Schifftner drew an RBI walk with the bases loaded and two outs for the 1-0 lead. WT tied up the game in the home half of the frame as
Adam Becker doubled to the wall down the left field line to drive in
Mike Manetta.
ENMU took the lead again in the second as Willie Ponce singled to the gap in right center with the bases loaded and two outs for the 3-1 lead. Becker cut into the lead again in the third as the senior singled thru the left side with two outs to plate Manetta and make it 3-2.
Eastern manufactured a run in the top of the sixth as a leadoff single, sac bunt and a wild pitch moved Camden Matthews to third followed by a Ponce RBI single thru the left side to extend the lead to 4-2. WT took their first lead of the game the lead again in the bottom of the sixth as a balk with the bases loaded and one out scored
Eddy Savoie followed by a
Seth Ochoa two-run single to center for the 5-4 lead.
Gavin Pringle picked up the win (5-0) for the Buffs, allowing one earned run on two hits with no walks and a strikeout in his 1.0 innings of relief.
Tyler Cornett claimed his fourth save with a pair of strikeouts in the final frame.
GAME TWO
The Buffs struck first in the bottom of the fourth inning as
Bryant Bailey reached on a fielder's choice groundout with the bases loaded and one out to plate
Will Fuenning for the 1-0 lead.
ENMU looked to manufacture a run in the top fo the fifth as their first base hit of the game started the frame followed by a sacrifice bunt, Rojas would force a grounder to Becker at third before a Ruger Poiry two-run homerun to left field for the 2-1 lead.
The Hounds added to their lead in the top of the seventh as Braeton Matthew scored from third on a wild pitch with the bases loaded and two outs followed by a Spencer Roach two-run single up the middle for the 5-1 lead.
Douglas Rojas picked up the loss (0-2) for the Buffs, allowing four earned runs on three hits with three walks and eight strikeouts in his 6.2 innings of work.
