Lady Buffs' Walk-Off Prevents Javelinas' Upset Bid

CANYON, Texas – The West Texas A&M Lady Buffs used a seventh-inning comeback to seal a series sweep against Texas A&M-Kingsville. WT held a lead going into the seventh inning, but a pair of Javelina runs put the Lady Buffs at a disadvantage. A single from Ruby Salzman tied the game at five, setting up Emilee Boyer's RBI groundout to end the game.

WT gained its first lead of the game in the bottom of the second inning when Diana Murtha blasted a ball over the left-field wall. Murtha's home run held up as the only run in the game until the top of the fourth when TAMUK tied the game on a bases-loaded single.

In the home half of the fourth, the Lady Buffs put runners on the bases but couldn't manufacture a run until Megan Guericke came up to the plate. Madison Johnson reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to second ahead of Guericke. In her at bat, Guericke ripped a single into the gap to bring home Johnson and give WT the lead once again.

The Javelinas took their first lead of the game in the top of the fifth after back-to-back solo home runs. In the bottom of the inning, the Lady Buffs responded once more after Julie Guzman started the order with a single. A pair of flyouts put TAMUK in position to escape the inning, but Gabie McConnell put WT ahead with one swing of the bat. The freshman infielder connected with her first collegiate home run to give the Lady Buffs a one-run advantage.

In the seventh, Breanna Carr singled to lead off for the Javelinas. A Kayla Gonzales double knotted the score at four and knocked Emilee Wilson from the game. After the pitching change, TAMUK took the lead on a single up the middle before Boyer retired the next two hitters.

The Lady Buffs' dramatic comeback started when Guzman walked. Braeland Booth followed Guzman's walk with a perfectly placed bunt single to put two runners on base. After a strikeout, Gabie McConnell beat out a ground ball to short, loading the bases for WT. Salzman, the Lady Buffs next hitter, dropped a single into right field to tie the game at five. On a 1-0 count, Boyer bounced a ball back to the pitcher, but the ball deflected off the pitcher's glove and went to second base. The throw to first recorded an out, but the delay allowed pinch runner Heaven Moreno to score and end the game.

WT returns to play on Friday, March 31 with a doubleheader in San Antonio against St. Mary's. Game one is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. with game two to follow. The series between the Lady Buffs and Rattlers finishes on Saturday with a 1 p.m. first pitch.
