CANYON, Texas – The #17 Buffaloes of West Texas A&M finished off opening weekend in style on Sunday afternoon as they scored 17 runs on 20 hits to pick up a Lone Star Conference sweep of the Texas A&M International Dustdevils at Jorge Haynes Field in Laredo, Texas.

WT got on the board in the top of the first inning as
Will Fuenning singled to center field with two outs to drive in
Ryan Johnson and
Adam Becker for the early 2-0 lead.
Cameron Loy added to the lead in the top of the second inning as the junior from Mansfield singled to center to plate
Kason Haggard and make it 3-0.

The Buffs used the long ball to extend their lead in the third inning as
Kory Schmidt connected on his first homerun of the season, a two-run shot down the right field line followed later in the inning by a
Mike Manetta RBI single. Manetta would score from third on a wild pitch followed by a Dustdevil error in the infield that scored Haggard,
Adam Becker kept the inning alive with a two-run double to center to make it 10-0.

Evan Leibl added to the WT lead in the top of the sixth as the California product singled to right with one out to drive in Becker followed by a Manetta RBI single thru the right side to extend the lead to 12-0. TAMIU plated their first runs of the game in the home half of the sixth as Daniel Hernandez and Alex Lugo registered back-to-back RBI doubles to cut the lead to 12-2.

WT would add some insurance runs in the top of the seventh on RBI singles from Becker and Schmidt followed by sacrifice flies from Haggard and
Dave Janssen,
Dylan Fesperman kept the inning alive with two outs as the junior from Phoenix drew an RBI walk with the bases loaded for the 17-2 lead.

Miller picked up the win (1-0) on the mound for the Buffs, allowing no runs on just one hit with one walk and eight strikeouts in his five innings of work.Â

The Buffs open up their home schedule next weekend as they host the Javelinas of Texas A&M-Kingsville in a four-game LSC series beginning on Friday, first pitch is set for 2 p.m. at Wilder Park.
