WICHITA FALLS, Texas – For the second game in a row, the West Texas A&M women's soccer team watched a one-goal halftime lead slip away as the Lady Buffs dropped a Lone Star Conference matchup to Midwestern State, 3-1. The Lady Buffs, still in search of their first conference win, dropped to 1-9-5 overall and 0-7-3 in league play.
After a quiet opening couple of minutes to the game,
Nicole Gray created an early goal-scoring opportunity for WT in the fourth minute. With the help of
Sydney Martin, Gray gained possession on the Mustangs' half of the field. As she approached the penalty box, Gray fired a shot from 25 yards out with Midwestern State goalkeeper Allison Dellis off her line. Before the ball could get over Dellis, the goalkeeper punched the ball over the goal for a corner kick. Dellis was forced to make another save two minutes later when
Bailey Malone attempted a shot. On the other side of the field,
Reagan Heelan and the WT back line kept the Mustangs quiet. The Lady Buffs broke open the scoring in the 22
nd minute after Midwestern State conceded a free kick near the sideline. With the box full of players, the Mustangs initially headed the ball out of the box, but it didn't travel far and ended at the feet of
Avery Putnam. Without hesitation, Putnam lifted a shot into the top corner of the goal. The Lady Buffs held on to their advantage until the break.
After halftime, the second half proved to swing totally in favor of Midwestern State. The Mustangs scored their first goal of the game four minutes into the second half as the WT defense lapsed momentarily. When Midwestern State sent a cross into the box, Heelan came off her line and attempted to smother the chance. The ball went through Heelan's arms and to the back post where a WT player blocked the ball into the goal. With 16 minutes to play, the Mustangs took a lead they wouldn't relinquish as Allessandra Romano netted a goal. Midwestern State put the game away a few minutes later when Isabella Cruz scored off a shot near the corner flag, barely sneaking the ball inside the post.
WT looks to get in the conference win column against Eastern New Mexico on Tuesday, Oct. 31. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. in Canyon.
