Lady Buffs Fall to St. Edward's on Wednesday

CANYON, Texas – The West Texas A&M women's soccer team couldn't walk away with three points as a trio of second-half goals from the St. Edward's Hilltoppers took the Lone Star Conference matchup, 3-1. After the loss, the Lady Buffs fell to 1-8-5 overall and 0-6-3 in conference play while the Hilltoppers improved to 5-5-3 overall and 4-4-2 in LSC action.

While WT controlled possession in the game's opening minutes, the Lady Buffs couldn't record a shot until the eight-and-a-half-minute mark. After` stealing a pass, Ashley Silvestre took on the St. Edward's defense. Weaving her way through traffic, Silvestre ripped a shot, but her attempt went into a Hilltopper defender. WT didn't stop putting pressure on St. Edward's after the blocked attempt as Silvestre tried from distance once again in the 12th minute. After her initial shot got saved, Mollie Ferro came in and cleaned up the rebound to give WT the lead. Despite multiple attempts from St. Edward's to tie the game in the first half, Reagan Heelan converted four saves and kept the Hilltoppers scoreless for the remainder of the half.
 
Second-half action started quickly as both teams took opportunities to get on the scoreboard. The Lady Buffs retained possession and controlled the pace of the game for over 20 minutes into the second half until the Hilltoppers advanced up the field with 15 minutes to play. Heelan made an impressive save as St. Edward's Liv Felix lifted a shot from 25 yards out as the junior goalkeeper timed her jump perfectly to push the ball over the crossbar. The Hilltoppers went back on attack after the save as Caitlyn Gonzalez took the ball towards the corner flag before tapping a pass to Ari Ramirez. Ramirez's cross went into the box for Tristyn Cabello who headed the ball into the net and tied the game. Almost three minutes later, the Hilltoppers advanced down the field once again after a WT miscue. After Rebekka Rehrer sent a through ball to Ramirez, Ramirez lifted a shot over a charging Heelan to take the lead. Determined to tie the game, the Lady Buffs focused their sights on the St. Edward's goal. With six and a half minutes to play, a cross from Silvestre inside the box where Alexsis Villarreal timed a jump to put her head on the ball but went just high. The Hilltoppers added an insurance goal with 40 seconds to play as the game ended 3-1.
 
WT travels to Wichita Falls, Texas where a match against Midwestern State awaits them. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m. at Stang Park.
