Canyon, Texas – A second-half comeback for the West Texas A&M women's soccer team came up short against the Texas Woman's Pioneers on Saturday night. With the 1-0 loss, the Lady Buffs fall to 1-7-5 overall and 0-5-3 in Lone Star Conference play.
Offense was hard to come by for both teams in the game's opening minutes. Texas Woman's registered its first shot six minutes into the game. The shot off the foot of Alyssa Striker went straight into the awaiting arms of
Reagan Heelan. In the 35
th minute, the Pioneers created the game's best scoring chance of the first half when Texas Woman's Erica Breedlove made a run inside the box as a service reached her foot. As Breedlove flicked the ball of the side of her foot, but Heelan dove to her left to smother the shot. The Pioneers retained control of the game by systematically working the field throughout the remainder of the first half. Despite eight shots and four on goal, the Lady Buffs held Texas Woman's off the scoreboard.
After the midway break, the Pioneers used the opening kickoff to work the WT side of the field. After a couple clearances by the Lady Buffs, Texas Woman's stole possession in the attacking third of the field. Striker sent a through ball into the box for a running Ailyn Oliveros. With a WT defender on her hip and Heelan charging off her line, Oliveros slipped a shot into the back of the net to take the lead. It wasn't until the 59
th minute for the Lady Buffs to record their first shot and shot on goal.
Lauren Stokes sent her chance towards the goal where the Pioneers' Amanda Farris momentarily dropped the ball before recovering the save. After a huge Heelan save, the Lady Buffs turned the defense into offense when
Alexsis Villarreal sent a ball over the back line for
Avery Putnam. Putnam caught up to the ball and sent a short pass to
Ashley Silvestre who was also making a run. Silvestre returned the ball to a wide-open Putnam on the edge of the 18-yard box. Putnam curled a shot towards the top corner but missed a tying goal by a matter of inches. A final attempt to tie the game in the closing minutes came to no avail as WT ran out of time in the game.
The Lady Buffs welcome St. Edward's to The Pitch on Wednesday, Oct. 25 at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday's game will serve as WT's Senior Day with festivities taking place at halftime.
