SAN ANGELO, Texas – The West Texas A&M women's soccer team couldn't overcome an early deficit as the Lady Buffs went on to lose 4-0 to the Angelo State Rambelles. With the loss, WT falls to 1-6-5 overall and 0-4-3 in Lone Star Conference action.
Angelo State proved to be the aggressors early in the match, retaining possession and working its way up the field. The Rambelles found an early chance as Katelin Heise chipped a ball towards the ball, but
Reagan Heelan played the ball perfectly to make an easy save. After the early chance, WT settled in on defense and kept Angelo State at bay. The defensive stand didn't last long as the Rambelles stole possession outside the 18-yard box. After the change in possession, Mia Czarnecki lifted a shot from 25 yards out and beat Heelan. Angelo State added to its lead in the 20
th minute as the Rambelles centered the ball in the box. As the pass came in, Heise flicked the ball off her head to an awaiting Mariah Griffin. Griffin settled the ball before firing a shot into the goal. The Lady Buffs looked to answer immediately after when
Sydney Martin found an open look at goal where Angelo State goalkeeper Amber Lockwood made the save.
With just over 20 minutes to play in the first half, the Rambelles netted another goal after Grace Jordan found Madison Maxey. Heise attempted to score her second goal of the match in the 32nd minute when she fired a shot towards goal. Heelan made a leaping save to push the ball over the bar and out of play. Czarnecki repeated her success in the 39
th minute as she scored another goal in an almost identical fashion to her first. Chasing four goals, the Lady Buffs ran out the clock in the half to prevent Angelo State from adding to its lead.
The second half proved to be like the first with the Rambelles controlling possession. Although Angelo State registered 10 shots with five on goal in the second half, the Lady Buffs held the Rambelles off the scoresheet. Any time WT advanced up the field, the Angelo State defenders cut off passing lanes and shut down any Lady Buff possession.
WT returns to play on Saturday, Oct. 21 with a 5 p.m. game against Texas Woman's.
