Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Buffs Draw with Rattlers on Wednesday

CANYON, Texas – A last-chance shot couldn't cross the goal line in time as the West Texas A&M men's soccer team drew with St. Mary's on Wednesday. With the draw, the Buffs move to 5-3-3 overall and 2-0-1 in Lone Star Conference play.

The Buffs and Rattlers opened the conference contest with a possession battle. St. Mary's recorded the game's first shots in the 10th minute as the WT back line blocked one and forced a high attempt to keep the game scoreless. As the Rattlers controlled possession in their half of the field, the Buffs applied pressure to intercept a pass. After D'Jonte Davis controlled possession, he passed the ball into the box for Matteo Landais. Landais controlled the pass, set his footing, and slipped a shot past St. Mary's goalkeeper Andre Schlaefli. Determined to level the score, Juan Jose Valdez Lopez ripped a shot that nailed the crossbar. The ball deflected straight down but didn't cross the goal line. After the scoring chance, the Buffs' defense shored up to send the game into halftime with a 1-0 score line.

After halftime, the game returned to a calmer pace than that of which the first half ended. After a pair of shots from both teams, the St. Mary's formulated a counterattack on WT's side of the field. The Rattlers eventually went down the field where Adam Aboohamidi slipped his way through the defense and snuck a shot past the outstretched arms of Asaf Kristal. A few minutes later, the Buffs countered after a St. Mary's corner kick. With a two-on-one attack, WT was able to get a shot blocked before a second attempt went high. The Rattlers continued to put pressure on the Buffs' defense as the clocked ticked down. With under 30 seconds to play, Kristal sent a goal kick down the field where Davis ended up with the ball. Davis sent a pass into space for Gabriel Nevarez who tapped the ball past Schlaefli. After a period of deliberation, the officials waved off the goal and ruled it came after time expired.

WT hits the road to take on Dallas Baptist. Action between the Buffs and Patriots is scheduled for 4 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 14 at the Patriot Soccer Field in Dallas.
