Landais Leads Buffs to Victory

DALLAS – A pair of first-half goals by Matteo Landais proved to be the difference in the West Texas A&M men's soccer team's 2-0 defeat of Dallas Baptist. The Buffs improved to 6-3-3 overall and 2-0-1 in Lone Star Conference play while the Patriots slide to 4-6-2 overall with a 1-2-1 mark in conference action.

Peyton Voelker accounted for the Patriots first three shots of the afternoon but none of his attempts found the goal. Voelker's best look at goal came 12 minutes in after a ball got sent into the box where the Buffs couldn't fully clear the ball. The DBU forward had the ball land at his feet with an open look at goal. Voelker ripped a shot from inside the 18-yard box which hit the crossbar and came back to hit Asaf Kristal. Luckily for WT, the deflection rolled out of bounds. WT used the defensive momentum it gained from the clearance to march down the field. In the 27th minute, the Patriots were called for a handball inside their box to give the Buffs a penalty kick. Stepping up to take the penalty, Landais buried the kick into the back of the net. Another foul on DBU in the 35th minute awarded WT a free kick straight ahead of the goal. Landais replicated his success on the set piece as the sophomore sent the kick into the back of the net once again. The two-goal difference ended to be the deficit at the end of the first half.

WT looked to have a third goal in the game just five minutes into the second half. As the Buffs advanced into the attacking third, Ben Siri fired a shot where Patriot goalkeeper Patrick Banich made the save. Siri's follow-up attempt looked to be headed to the back of the net, but a DBU defender flew in to clear the ball of the line. The Patriots had a scoring opportunity in the 56th minute when a cross went into the box for Avery Brazzell. Brazzell's sliding attempt went over the bar and out of play. Kristal came up huge in the 71st minute when Evan Pustejovsky headed a ball towards the near post where the Buffs' keeper made a diving save and controlled the rebound. After DBU went down to 10 men in the 73rd minute, WT controlled possession and the pace of the game to run out the remaining time.

The Buffs continue its short road stint on Wednesday, Oct. 18 with a road game against Texas A&M International. The Buffs and Dustdevils meet in Laredo at 7 p.m.
