No. 14 Lady Buffs Hold Off Bulldogs

WEATHERFORD, Okla. – Asha James and Maria-Frances Serrant scored a goal each in the West Texas A&M women's soccer team's 2-1 win over the Southwestern Oklahoma State Bulldogs. The Lady Buff's move to 5-0 on the season while the Bulldogs fall to 0-3-1 overall.

The Bulldogs did what few have done this season in the opening minutes. Neutralize the Lady Buff attack. WT's best shot came in the 27th minute when James found Nicole Gray on a ball just outside the 18-yard box. Gray escaped the pressure of Ashley Hughes, but Gray's chip shot sailed just over the bar. Despite holding a 12-5 advantage in shots and 5-3 lead in shots on goal, the Bulldogs held the Lady Buffs off the scoreboard in the first half for the first time this season.

The Lady Buffs found an opportunity in the 65th minute but Maliyah Mendoza's shot from inside the box went wide. WT broke through the Bulldogs' defense minutes later when James opened the scoring. James found space in the attacking third and beat two SWOSU defenders. Approaching the box, the junior ripped a shot, slipping it under the hand of Hughes and into the back of the net. Holding a 1-0 lead, Mendoza, going down the sideline, sent a ball into the box for Serrant to tap home for a 2-0 lead. In the 83rd minute, the Bulldogs put a ball away after an initial shot hit the crossbar to cut the lead in half.

WT outshot SWOSU 23-12 in the contest, maintaining a 12-6 advantage in shots on goal. Despite giving up a goal, Reagan Heelan converted five saves in the win.

The Lady Buffs return home for their third game in five days as WT hosts CSU-Pueblo on Saturday. The Lady Buffs and ThunderWolves kickoff at 1 p.m. on The Pitch.
