No. 14 Lady Buffs Silence ThunderWolves At Home

CANYON, Texas – The No. 14-ranked West Texas A&M women's soccer team defeated the CSU Pueblo ThunderWolves 3-0 at The Pitch on Saturday. The Lady Buffs moved to 6-0-0 overall on the year, their best start since the 2006 season.

WT looked to get on the board early in the game as Maliyah Mendoza and Reagan Matacale forced CSU Pueblo goalkeeper Nicole Genis to make a pair of saves less than five minutes into the game. Mendoza took another shot a few minutes later but couldn't put it on frame. The Lady Buff offense went quiet until the 39th minute when Asha James put one in the back of the net off a pass from Mandy Stricker. WT only took four shots in the period but held on to the one-goal lead through the first half.

Two and a half minutes into the second half, Stricker sent a ball into the box, looking for James once again. James was unable to get there at first but took advantage of a misplay by Genis to score her second goal of the game. Three minutes later, Matacale found Maria-Frances Serrant outside the box. Serrant took one dribble after receiving the pass to rip a shot into the goal for the 3-0 lead. WT remained content with the advantage, holding the three-goal lead for the next 40 minutes of the game.

Reagan Heelan posted her third shutout win of the season, needing to make just one save in the game. The Lady Buffs held a 10-5 advantage in shots including a 7-1 difference in shots on goal.

WT faces a break before opening Lone Star Conference play against UT Permian Basin on Sept. 21. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. on The Pitch
