No. 10 Lady Buffs Power Past Falcons

CANYON, Texas – In front of a record-breaking crowd, the 10th-ranked West Texas A&M women's soccer team defeated the UT Permian Basin, 4-0. The Lady Buffs, now 7-0-0 overall, moved to 1-0-0 in Lone Star Conference play while the Falcons fell to 2-4-1 overall, 0-3-0 in the LSC.

WT started the first half by registering the game's first shot less than a minute into the game. Reagan Matacale followed up Mandy Stricker's initial shot with a shot of her own at the 2:49 mark. The Lady Buffs tallied five shots but couldn't find the back of the net until the 33rd minute. At the 33:33 mark, Maria-Frances Serrant broke free along the sideline, taking the ball into the box. Serrant avoided UTPB goalkeeper Jenna McEnaney, slipping her shot under McEnaney's arm. Despite outshooting the Falcons 8-2 in the half, the Lady Buffs settled for the lone goal.

WT carried the offensive momentum through halftime and into the second half. Entering the 70th minute, Matacale ripped a shot from 20-yards out, bouncing the ball off the far post and into the goal. Following Matacale's goal, the Lady Buffs marched down the field to earn another corner kick.  Matacale, sending the ball into the box, watched as it bounced to Alexsis Villarreal. Villarreal placed the ball inside the post to score her first collegiate goal and give WT a 3-0 lead.

Matacale came up big on a free kick with 10:45 remaining in the game. The sophomore's ball into the box went straight to Serrant who headed the ball in, sealing the Lady Buffs' victory. Reagan Heelan recorded her fourth solo shutout on the season, making three saves on six shots.

WT continues conference play with a top-10 matchup against No. 1 Dallas Baptist on Saturday. The Lady Buffs and Patriots kickoff at 1 p.m. at the Patriot Soccer Field.
