DALLAS – In a battle of top-10 ranked teams, top-ranked Dallas Baptist defeated the Lady Buffs, 2-0. WT suffers its first loss of the season, moving to 7-1 overall and 1-1 in the Lone Star Conference, while Dallas Baptist improved to 6-0-1 overall and 2-0-1 in the LSC.
The Lady Buffs found their first shot five minutes into the game as
Asha James played a ball forward to
Maria-Frances Serrant. Serrant battled two Patriots' defenders as she entered the box, but DBU goalkeeper Adrianna Schroeder stopped the scoring opportunity. Regan Heelan registered her first save of the day on a one-on-one chance in the 17
th minute. After a cross went over the WT defenders, Angelina Olmos gathered and fired a shot, but watched Heelan punch the ball away. The Patriots threatened again in the 23
rd minute off another crossing ball. DBU had a player open on the back post, but Heelan made the diving save once again. Despite scoring chances for both teams, the game went to the half scoreless.
The Patriots found the game's opening goal in the 51
st minute as Sophia Schrock curled a ball into the top corner of the goal from outside the 18-yard box. With 15 minutes left in the game James broke free as she approached the box. James' shot rolled wide of the back post, keeping the game 1-0. DBU added an insurance goal in the 82
nd minute as Michelle Gonzalez beat the Lady Buff defense inside the box.
Although the game remained closely contested for most of the time, the Patriots dominated the stat sheet. DBU outshot the Lady Buffs 16-4 including 8-1 in shots on goal. Despite the loss,
Reagan Heelan tallied six saves on a busy afternoon.
The Lady Buffs look to bounce back on Wednesday against Lubbock Christian. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 in Lubbock.
