LUBBOCK, Texas – The No. 10 Lady Buffs of West Texas A&M went on the road to take on the Lubbock Christian Chaparrals on Wednesday night. The Lady Buffs and Chaps played a close 90 minutes but ended scoreless. WT moves to 7-1-1 overall on the season and 1-1-1 in Lone Star Conference play while LCU moved to 6-0-5 overall, 3-0-2 in LSC action.
The Chaps found the game's first scoring chance nearly 15 minutes into the first half. After a ball was played into the Lady Buffs' defensive third, LCU's Lexi De La Cruz gathered the ball in the box. Coming off her goal line,
Reagan Heelan smothered De La Cruz to make the save and keep the game scoreless. A few minutes later,
Asha James found
Maria-Frances Serrant on a run into the Chaps' box, but Serrant's shot couldn't find the frame. Despite chances for both teams, the Lady Buffs and Chaps went to the midway point scoreless. WT held a slight advantage in shots, 4-3.
The second half started the same way the first half ended. Neither team was able to spend sizable time in their respective attacking third of the field. Heelan came up big once again in the 59
th minute when De La Cruz placed a shot toward the back post, but the Lady Buffs' goalkeeper made the save. On the following corner kick, the Chaps were able to get another shot on goal, but Heelan punched away the scoring opportunity. WT saw a scoring chance of their own come in the 70
th minute when
Nicole Gray pushed up the field in transition. Gray's centering pass found James, but James' following shot ended up being blocked. The Chaps and Lady Buffs tallied eight shots each in the second half but couldn't break through on the scoreboard as the game ended in a draw.
Heelan posted a season-high seven saves on the way to her fifth shutout of the season.
