No. 17 Lady Buffs Take Down DBU in Conference Opener

CANYON, Texas – West Texas A&M remains undefeated against DBU as the No. 17 Lady Buffs opened Lone Star Conference play on a high note after handing the Patriots just their third loss of the season on Friday night.

By The Numbers
WT hit .265 as a team in the victory with 59 kills on 151 swings with 19 errors to go along with eight service aces, 10 blocks, 52 assists and 58 digs. The Lady Buffs limited DBU to one of hits lowest hitting percentages of the year at .182 with 49 kills on 137 attempts with 24 errors with one ace, six blocks, 41 assists, and 60 digs. 
 
Torrey Miller put on another dominating performance as the junior registered a match- and season-high 26 kills on 55 attempts with six errors to hit .364 to pir with 11 digs for the double-double. Blair Moreland, the conference Preseason Setter of the Year, paced the offense with 23 assists followed by newcomer Ainsley Malis with 15 and 12 digs for her own double-double. Emma Patterson led the back row with 14 digs while Katrina Johnson was responsible for six of the Lady Buffs 10 blocks. 
 
AJ Koele hit .342 to lead the Patriots with 18 kills on 38 attempts with five errors while Lauryn Burt had a match-high 37 assists.  Emily Van Slate and Delaney Fuller each recorded 12 digs in the back row while Koele, Shaylee Shore, and Lindsey Otero each had three blocks. 
 
The Milestones
  • WT continues to lead the all-time series against DBU, 14-0
  • Torrey Miller recorded her 39th career double-double (26 kills, 11 digs)
  • Ainsley Malis registered her first double-double in the Maroon & White (15 assists, 12 digs)
  • Lady Buffs recorded a season-high eight service aces, total 53 on the season
  • WT ranks second in the LSC in hitting percentage (.246), fourth in total kills (573), third in blocks per frame (2.50) 
  • Emma Becker had a season-high 12 kills, moved to first in the LSC leaderboard with a .353 hitting percentage

The Lady Buffs finish opening weekend of conference play tomorrow afternoon with a rematch against the UT Tyler Patriots (7-4, 1-0 LSC).  First serve is set for 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 17, in the friendly confines of the WTAMU Fieldhouse "The Box."
