No. 14 Lady Buffs Sweep Past Competition on Opening Day

CANYON, Texas – The No. 14 Lady Buffs of West Texas A&M led off the 2022 season 2-0 after sweeping Adams State (27-25, 25-12, 25-18) and UC-Colorado Springs (25-18, 25-10, 25-22) on Friday.

By the Numbers
The Lady Buffs hit .432 in the morning with 44 kills on 88 attempts with just six errors while compiling 40 assists, 42 digs, seven blocks and five service aces.  ASU totaled 35 kills on 100 attempts with 17 errors to hit .175 with 33 assists, 39 digs, and one block. 
 
Torrey Miller led the Lady Buffs with 10 kills on 22 swings followed by Abi Nash with nine while Ainsley Malis recorded 19 assists in her debut for the Maroon & White.  Freshman Taytum Stow was responsible for four of the Lady Buffs seven blocks to go along with Emma Patterson's career-high 14 digs. 
 
Riley Rabedeaux recorded a match-high 13 kills on 37 attempts for the Grizzlies with Madeleline Benally dishing out 27 assists with two service aces.  Aileen Bugas had a team-high 10 digs while Cora Ellis had the lone block.   
 
Milestones
  • Emma Patterson had a career-high 21 digs
  • Lady Buffs moved to 36-7 all-time in season openers; 32-2 in season openers at The Box
  • WT improves their win streak to five over Adams State; leads all-time series 12-3

By the Numbers
WT tallied 37 kills on 96 swings with 16 errors to hit .219 as a team to go along with 35 assists, four service aces, 45 digs and nine blocks.  The Mountain Lions registered 26 kills on 112 attempts with 26 errors while totaling 32 digs, 23 assists, five blocks and three aces. 
 
Senior Kayla Elliott recorded 11 kills to lead the match to go along with a match-high five blocks while Blair Moreland dished out 16 assists.  Canyon product Bryli Contreras had 15 digs in her debut for WT. 
 
Hannah Ammerman had seven kills to lead UCCS while Reilley Babcock had 15 assists.  On defense, Jordyn Kinsey had seven digs and Nicole Medlin had four blocks. 
 
Milestones
  • WT led off the season 2-0 for the second straight year in a row
  • Kayla Elliott hit a career-high .668 with 11 kills on 16 attempts
 
COMING UP NEXT
The Lady Buffs will complete the BritKare Lady Buff Classic tomorrow, August 27, with a match against St. Mary's at 11:30 a.m. before going head-to-head with No. 12 Northwest Missouri State in the tournament finale at 7 p.m.
 
The matchup against the Northwest Bearcats will feature Black Out the Box for fans to wear black and support the Lady buffs.
