Lady Buffs Shutout Aggies, Advance to Quarterfinals Against #1 UT Tyler

TYLER, Texas – West Texas A&M's Heidi Vortherms and Kyra Lair combined for the Lady Buffs eighth shutout of the season after defeating Cameron, 4-0, on Friday afternoon to advance to the Lone Star Conference Quarterfinals.  
 
The Lady Buffs will face top-seeded and No. 1 UT Tyler tonight in the quarterfinals at Suddenlink Field in Tyler at 7:30 p.m.
 
With one out, Cameron's Karis Clark singled into short before advancing to third on a sac bunt and throwing error, but the threat was ended as Vortherms caught the batter looking to end the threat. 
 
WT opened scoring in the first inning as Brittni Rufus led off with a single into center before moving coming around the bases on a RBI single through the 5-6 hole from Diana Murtha to lead 1-0.  The Lady Buffs doubled their lead one batter later as Madison Johnson doubled into right center to bring in Murtha. 
 
After two scoreless innings, the Lady Buffs hit back-to-back doubles to lead off the fourth with Johnson hitting her second double of the day into left field before until scoring on Sydney Greeson's shot into right center. Greeson moved to third on a wild pitch until Nikki Warren was subbed in to pinch run.  With one out, the final run would come across the plate as Warren scored on a wild pitch to make it 4-0.  
 
Lair jumped into the action in the fifth where the junior pitcher shutdown the Aggies offense with nine consecutive outs. The Lady Buffs outhit the Aggies 7-4 led by Johnson who went 2-for-3 at the plate with a run and one RBI. 
 
Vortherms (13-7) was rewarded the victory on the mound allowing just four hits with two strikeouts while Lair was earned the save with four strikeouts through three innings.  Breley Webb (11-9) was credited the loss allowing four earned runs on six hits with one strikeout.
