Seventh Inning Rally Lifts No. 22 West Texas A&M Past Mustangs

CANYON, Texas – The West Texas A&M Lady Buffs moved back into the win column on Friday night after sweeping past Midwestern State at Schaeffer Park.  WT claimed game one, 15-7, before using a seven inning rally to take the series finale, 7-6.  
 
The Lady Buffs move to 23-12 on the season and 12-10 in Lone Star Conference action while the Mustangs drop to 6-31 (5-17 LSC). 
 
THE BASICS

Midwestern State opened scoring in game one of the conference doubleheader as sophomore Hannah Hetherington hit a two-out rally home run into centerfield to put the Mustangs on the board.  
 
The solo shot was immediately responded in the bottom of the inning with the help of five runs on five hits.  Brittni Rufus led off with a single to the mound before she stole a pair of bases to draw the throw down to third.  The toss from behind the plate went into the outfield for Rufus to easily score to level the field.  Three consecutive singles from Diana Murtha, Sydney Greeson and Megan Guericke put the Lady Buffs ahead, 5-1. 
 
The Mustangs capitalized on an error to cut the lead to one but WT returned with a pair of runs as Gabriella Valforte scored on a wild pitch before Greeson hit a two-run double down the left field to make it 9-3, in favor of WT. 
 
WT and MSU each exchanged runs over the next three innings to make it a 12-5 ball game until the Mustangs took advantage of a throwing error from behind the plate to add two runs to the board.  WT returned with a three-run homer by Brittni Rufus as the sophomore drove a 1-0 pitch into center to capture the 15-7 run-rule victory. 
 
The Lady Buffs outhit the Mustangs 13-10 led by Rufus.  The Mansfield product went 4-for-5 at the plate with three RBI followed by Greeson with a game-high four. 
 
Heidi Vortherms (10-5) was rewarded the victory allowing seven runs (four earned) on 10 hits with nine strikeouts and a walk through six complete innings.  Addi Hanna (0-11) received the loss allowing nine runs (five earned) on six hits with two walks and one strikeout.

WT opened scoring in the first as Gabriella Valforte hit a sacrifice fly to center to score Brittni Rufus from third to take a 1-0 lead but the Mustangs evened the score with a solo home run before taking the lead in the third, 3-1.
 
Ruby Salzman reached on a fielding error to bring Valforte back up to the plate where the sophomore took the first pitch deep and out, sending her second homer of the season into left to tie the game. The Mustangs brought three runs across the plate to make it a 6-4 ball game heading into the bottom of the seventh.
 
Salzman led off the rally as the junior launched her 46th career home run into left center to cut the Mustangs lead to one.  Valforte walked to bring Diana Murtha to the plate.  The Summerlin, Nev. product doubled down the left field line to move runners to second and third.  Julie Guzman reached on MSU's second error of the night for pinche runner Malaya Delfin to tie the score at 6-all.  With no outs, Sydney Greeson hit a deep sac fly into left for Murtha to easily tag up and score the winning run to record the Lady Buffs' fourth series sweep of the season. 
 
Emma Parrish (3-1) was credited the victory throwing a 1.1 inning shutout with one walk while Kennedy Cameron (4-11) received the loss allowing seven runs (four earned) on nine hits with three strikeouts. 
 
UP NEXT
The Lady Buffs will return to Schaeffer Park for the final time of the regular season when they host Texas Woman's on Sunday, April 10, for Senior Day.  WT will honor Sydney Greeson between games.
