Vortherms Tosses Perfect Game, No. 22 Lady Buffs Win Two in Final Home Stand

CANYON, Texas – Freshman Heidi Vortherms registered the program's fourth perfect game to lead the No. 22 Lady Buffs of West Texas A&M to a doubleheader sweep over Texas Woman's on Sunday afternoon.  WT used Vortherms perfect game to shutout the Pioneers, 4-0, before completing the series, 10-4, to conclude the regular-season home schedule.  
 
WT improves to 25-12 and 14-10 in Lone Star Conference play while the Pioneers drop to 9-26 (4-20 LSC).  The Lady Buffs will finish the regular-season on the road, returning to action on April 22 in Odessa to take on UT Permian Basin before facing Western New Mexico on April 24. 
 
THE BASICS

After two scoreless innings, the Lady Buffs jumped on the board as Gabriella Valforte hit an RBI grounder to the shortstop to bring home Brittni Rufus from third after she reached on a throwing error.  WT doubled its lead in the fourth as Nikki Warren's attempt to draw the throw to second succeeded with the Lady Buffs taking advantage of the Pioneers mistake for Megan Guericke to score. 
 
Vortherms continued her shutout in the fifth when the Sioux Falls, S.D. product struct out three consecutive batters on 12 pitches. 
 
Pinch hitter Shyanne Sanchez led off the sixth before a fielding error moved runners into first and second.  Guericke squared up to lay down the sacrifice bunt to advance the runners but the play at first drew the fielder off the bag for the runner to come diving into home to make it 3-0.  The final run was added to the board as Sydney Greeson scored on a passed ball.  
 
The Lady Buffs shut down the Pioneers 1-2-3 to secure Vortherms first collegiate perfect game. 
 
Vortherms moved to 11-5 on the season throwing seven complete innings with six strikeouts while Jalee McDonald (1-5) received the loss allowing four runs (one earned) on five hits with two walks and three strikeouts.

The Lady Buffs led off scoring for the second time of the day as freshman Nikki Warren doubled off the left field wall to score Megan Guericke from second. 
 
TWU quickly responded in the top of the third with a pair of runs after taking advantage of a wild pitch and throwing error to take a 2-1 lead until the Lady Buffs scored seven runs in the bottom of the inning to take control of the game. 
 
Ruby Salzman was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning before coming around the bases on three consecutive hits from Gabriella Valforte, Diana Murtha, and Maddie Geidel.  Megan Guericke reached base on a fielder's choice that brought in Murtha until Julie Guzman's squeeze bunt grabbed the deciding run. 
 
Warren once again drove in Guericke with a hit into right center to extend the Lady Buffs lead, 6-2, until the Lady Buffs capitalized on a pair of errors to make it 8-2.
 
The Pioneers scrambled to add two runs to the board but Gabriella Valforte returned the favor with her second home run of the weekend to secure the series sweep. 
 
Emilee Wilson (7-3) was rewarded the victory throwing five complete innings with four runs (one earned) on six hits to go along with four strikeouts.  Kelsie Briggs (4-10) was credited the loss allowing eight runs (six earned) on six hits with two walks and a strikeout.
