No. 20 Lady Buffs Sweep Past Aggies in LSC Doubleheader

CANYON, Texas – West Texas A&M softball grabbed a pair of Lone Star Conference victories on Friday as the No. 20 Lady Buffs swept past the Cameron Aggies.  WT defeated Cameron 4-1 before recording their ninth run-rule victory of the season to take game two 12-2.  The Lady Buffs improved to 21-10 (10-8 LSC) on the season while the Aggies moved to 19-17 (7-11 LSC).  
 
WT will return to Schaeffer Park on Sunday, April 3, when it hosts No. 22 Oklahoma Christian for Bark in the Park.  
 
THE BASICS
Game 30 Score: #20 West Texas A&M 4, Cameron 1

After a scoreless first inning, the Lady Buffs grabbed hold of a 3-0 lead with the help of four consecutive hits.  Sydney Greeson led off a two-out rally with a double down the left field line to land WT its first base runner.  Megan Guericke and Braeland Booth hit back-to-back singles to take the lead, bringing Brittni Rufus to the plate.  The sophomore outfielder hit just out of range of the left fielder to score Guericke and pinch runner Malaya Delfin to lead 3-0. 
 
Cameron ended the shutout in the fifth as Maci McMurtey hit up the middle before coming around the bases on a throwing error from behind the plate.  The run was quickly responded as Gabriella Valforte doubled into right center until she scored on hard hit to third from Madison Johnson.  
 
The Lady Buffs outhit the Aggies 10-8 led by Booth who went 3-for-3 at the plate while Rufus registered a game-high two RBI.  
 
Heidi Vortherms (9-4) was rewarded the victory after allowing just one run with eight hits and eight strikeouts while Breley Webb (8-5) was credited the loss with four runs (four earned) on 10 hits with one walk. 
 
THE BASICS

Pitching: (W) Emilee Wilson (6-2), (L) Josie Swafford (5-5)
 
Cameron opened scoring in the first inning as Josie Swafford smoked a double down the left field line to take a 1-0 lead but was immediately responded as Gabriella Valforte hit an RBI single in the bottom of the inning to even the score. 
 
WT took control of the game in the second as the Lady Buffs used five hits to score seven runs.  Julie Guzman walked after battling an 11-pitch at bat before stealing second to move into scoring position.  Sydney Greeson singled to bring Megan Guericke up to the plate.  She sophomore executed a successful squeeze play to score Guzman from third to take the lead.  
 
Maddie Geidel hit a two-run triple into right center before scoring on a grounder to second from Brittni Rufus.  With one out, Ruby Salzman launched her 44th career home run into right center to push the Lady Buffs lead out to five, 6-1.  
 
Madison Johnson added her own triple to the box score to add a run to the board until the Aggies walked in a run to make it 8-1 at the end of the second.  CU tagged another run to the board but the Lady Buffs brought four runs across the plate to secure the 12-2 run-rule victory. 
 
Salzman and Rufus each recorded a pair of hits to lead the Lady Buffs offense while Salzman had a game-high three RBI.  
 
Emilee Wilson (6-2) received the victory on the mound allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits with five strikeouts through four innings while Josie Swafford (5-5) was credited the loss allowing six runs (six earned) through 1 1/3 innings.
