SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The No. 20 Buffaloes of West Texas A&M dropped their fifth contest of the season as they fell to the St. Mary's Rattlers, 100-98, in overtime inside the Bill Greehey Arena on Tuesday afternoon. The Buffs fall to 19-5 (6-4 LSC) while St. Mary's moves to 9-7 (6-1 LSC) on the season.
Four Buffs reached double figures led by sophomore guard
Larry Wise. The Waxahachie, Texas product totaled 22 points shooting 6-of-17 from the field, 1-of-5 from the three and 9-of-9 at the charity stripe to go along with six rebounds, three steals and a pair of assists.
Zach Toussaint and
Julius Brown also reached double figures at 20 and 19 with Brown earning a season-high seven steals.
The Rattlers led off scoring before taking a quick 13-2 lead at the 17:01 mark until the Buffs came back from a 15-point deficit to bring the score withing three, 25-23, with a fast break 3-pointer from Toussaint. At 6:12, Brown snagged the steal before Wise posted two on the board to give WT its first lead but was quickly responded with another successful run by the Rattlers to make it a 12-point game, 47-35 at the half.
WT continued to struggle to find its rhythm as a layup for Mamady Djikine gave the Rattlers an 18-point lead, their largest of the night. Momentum shifted when Wise knocked down a free throw to ignite a 17-0 run for the Buffs to regain the lead. The Rattlers evened the score at 80-all at 1:14 before free throws by Ryan Leonard gave St. Mary's an 84-82 lead until Brown pulled up with a jumper to send the game into overtime.
StMU grabbed a 10-point advantage over the Buffs until a 3-pointer for Wise snapped the run. WT chipped away at the Rattlers lead before Toussaint's shot from the deep evened the board at 98-all.
With 3.1 seconds left, the Josh Brewer missed the shot from the deep but Caleb Jordan grabbed the rebound before putting up the deciding field goal for the Rattlers to take the 100-98 decision.
WT finished the day 30-of-86 (34.9%) from the field while going 7-of-33 (21.2%) from beyond the deep and 31-of-39 (79.5%) at the charity stripe to go along with 48 rebounds, 11 assists, 18 steals and one block.
Kavon Booker registered his third double-double of the season with 15 points and a career-high 14 rebounds.
The Rattlers went 34-of-57 (59.6%) from the floor, 16-of-24 (66.7%) from the three and 16-of-24 (66.7%) at the free throw line while collecting 39 rebounds, 22 assists, eight steals and five blocks. Five players scored double figures led by Josh Brewer who posted 22 points followed by Caleb Jordan at 20.
WT return to action on Saturday, Feb. 5, with a non-conference game against Cameron in Lawton, Okla. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. at the Aggie Gym.
