No. 9 Lady Buffs Take Down No. 22 Orediggers in Five Set Thriller

DENVER, Colo. – After falling behind in the first set, the No. 9 West Texas A&M Lady Buffs came back to win the NCAA South Central Regional Semifinal match, knocking off No. 22 Colorado School of Mines in a five set thriller on Friday night to advance to their second consecutive regional championship.  
 
WT will take on tournament host and No. 1 MSU Denver (30-1, 18-0 RMAC) in the championship match tomorrow night at 6 p.m. at the Auraria Event Center in Denver.  The Orediggers season comes to an end in the semifinals with an overall record of 22-8.

The Numbers
WT hit .247 in the five set victory with 71 kills on 178 attempts with 27 errors to go along with 84 digs, 67 assists, eight blocks and four service aces.  The Orediggers had 59 kills with 21 errors on 182 attempts to hit .209 along with 77 digs, 55 assists, seven aces, and six blocks. 
 
Junior Torrey Miller and senior Kayla Elliott combined for 35 kills with Elliott hitting .429 with just two errors on 35 swings to go along with a match-high five blocks.  Blair Moreland guided the offense with 30 assists in the match followed by Ainsley Malis with 25 while Bryli Contreras had 23 digs in the back row.  Abi Nash had 14 kills on the night with 10 digs for the double-double while Miller joined with 10 digs for her 10th double-double of the season.
 
Megan Neil led Mines' offense with 16 kills on 46 attempts with five errors to hit .239 while First Team All-Region selection Drew Stokes had a match-high 50 assists. Elle Duis had 21 digs and Morgan McChesney had a team-high four blocks. 

The Milestones
  • The Lady Buffs are 54-25 overall during the NCAA Tournament that includes 14 regional tournament titles
  • Fourth year head coach Kendra Potts advances to her second regional championship, moving to 5-2 in the NCAA Tournament with an 87-10 career record for an incredible winning percentage of 89.7%
  • Nash's and Miller's double-doubles bring the Lady Buffs season total to 19; Miller now has 45 career double-doubles
