DALLAS – The West Texas A&M women's soccer team saw its season come to an end on Sunday evening in Dallas. The Lady Buffs couldn't overcome a late first-half goal, eventually falling to the No. 1-ranked Dallas Baptist Patriots, 2-0.
Both DBU and WT played the opening minutes with a sense of caution as possession split evenly. The Patriots registered the game's opening scoring chance, but the shot sailed high. Shortly after, DBU attempted another outside opportunity, but
Reagan Heelan allowed the strike to go over the bar. The Lady Buffs first scoring opportunity came with 20 minutes before halftime as
Alexsis Villarreal put a boot on the ball from outside the 18-yard box. Villarreal's shot went into the waiting hands of DBU goalkeeper Adrianna Schroeder.
Maria-Frances Serrant followed Villarreal's chance with a shot on goal of her own. After
Maliyah Mendoza found Serrant in front of the box, Serrant placed a shot to the back post where Schroeder dove just before the ball crossed the goal line. As the first half went on, the Lady Buffs found shot opportunities but couldn't find the frame. With 4:31 left before the half, DBU connected on a handful of passes to set up a shot in front of the goal for the lead.
The Patriots carried over their momentum from the first half into the second as DBU controlled possession to start. The Patriot attack pressed forward, but the Lady Buff defense held strong. WT found a chance to press up the field in the 63
rd minute. As
Reagan Matacale approached the box, the sophomore defender drew a foul and a free kick. On the following kick,
Emily Avila's ball into the box bounced around before DBU cleared. Just under 20 minutes to play, the Patriots took advantage of a failed clearance by WT as Madison Parks placed the ball in the back of the net. DBU held possession throughout the remainder of the second half, holding the Lady Buffs from advancing up the field. As WT prepared for a final attack, the Patriots shored up the defense to shutout the Lady Buffs.
WT's season ends with a record of 14-4-4 and a trip to the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament.
