CANYON, Texas – The West Texas A&M women's soccer team kept their postseason dreams alive on Tuesday afternoon as the Lady Buffs defeated the St. Edward's Hilltoppers, 2-1. WT advances to the Lone Star Conference Tournament semifinals on Thursday, Nov. 4.
After an early Lady Buff shot by
Alexsis Villarreal, St. Edward's responded with a shot on goal of their own a few minutes later.
Reagan Heelan handled the shot with ease, allowing the WT offense to go back to work. The pressure paid off as the Lady Buffs drew a foul on the attacking side of the field. On the following free kick,
Emily Avila sent a ball into the box that landed on the foot of
Ashley Silvestre. On Silvestre's first touch, the junior tapped the ball into the back of the net for the early 1-0 lead. As the half went on, the Lady Buffs controlled the possession until the Hilltoppers earned a free kick in the final 10 seconds. As the clock approached zero, Maddi Davis took a quick shot but hit the post.
After WT kicked off to start the second half, the Lady Buffs pushed up the field, putting early stress on the Hilltopper back line. WT registered three shots in the first minute and 15 seconds. After
Maria-Frances Serrant's initial shot was saved,
Nicole Gray put the rebound into the back of the net. Gray's goal proved to be the difference maker as St. Edward's cut the lead in half in the 64
th minute.
The Lady Buffs held a 17-10 advantage in shots and 10-4 lead in shots in goal. WT earned seven corner kicks compared to St. Edward's four.
The Lady Buffs advance to the semifinals of the LSC Tournament where they will face off against Midwestern State in Dallas.
