DALLAS – After leading in the first half, the West Texas A&M women's soccer team fell to Midwestern State 2-0 at the Patriot Soccer Field in Dallas. The Lady Buffs overall record dropped to 13-3-4 with the loss.
The Lady Buffs pressured the Mustangs' back line early on, registering a shot less than 15 seconds into the game. After a pair of saves by
Reagan Heelan in the defensive third, WT turned the defense into offense, pushing up the field moments later. In the seventh minute, a handball by Midwestern State led to a free kick outside the 18-yard box.
Emily Avila took the kick, sneaking the ball under the bar to give WT a 1-0 lead. The Lady Buff defense held strong after multiple Midwestern State attacks, including a clearance off the goal line on a corner kick with 10 minutes before the half. Despite being up by a goal on the score board, WT trailed Midwestern State 12-5 in shots and 7-0 in corner kicks.
After halftime, the second half started as a possession battle with neither team able to progress up the field. The Lady Buffs started to gain an upper hand in possession and offensive chances while draining the second half clock. WT did this until Midwestern State caught the Lady Buffs in transition down the sideline. On a ball sent in across the box, Cassidy Savoy took a touch and sent a ball past the outstretched arms of Heelan to tie the game. The Mustangs struck once more with nine minutes to play on a play like their first goal as Savoy found Senna Garcia for the go-ahead goal. WT's final pushes to tie the game came up short as the Mustangs held on for the win.
The Lady Buffs await the NCAA Selection Show on Monday to determine their postseason journey.
