CANYON, Texas – In what looked to be headed to a draw, the West Texas A&M women's soccer pulled ahead in the 80
th minute to defeat the No. 22-ranked Angelo State Rambelles. The Lady Buffs, 9-1-1 overall, improve to 3-1-1 in Lone Star Conference play while the Rambelles (10-2-1, 5-2-1) suffered their second loss of the season.
WT found offensive success early in the game, nearly taking the lead five minutes into the game. After
Asha James sent a centering pass into the box,
Nicole Gray looked to have found the back of the net, but Angelo State goalkeeper Kira Miller pushed the ball wide. The Lady Buffs found another clean look at goal a few minutes later, but
Maria-Frances Serrant's header sailed just over the bar. In the 21
st minute, Miller made another crucial save on James' shot from outside the box. Despite the scoring opportunities, WT and Angelo State went to the intermission scoreless. The Lady Buffs outshot the Rambelles 9-5 in the half with a 6-1 difference in shots on goals.
WT continued to find chances to score in the second half, but Miller held firm in goal for Angelo State. The Lady Buffs placed three of their six shots on goal in the first 30 minutes of the second half.
Alexsis Villarreal set up what proved to be the game-winning sequence by forcing a turnover near midfield. As the Rambelles scrambled back, Villarreal found Serrant on a run into the attacking third of the field. Serrant battled a pair of Angelo State defenders, drawing a free kick outside the box. On the ensuing free kick,
Emily Avila watched her ball go untouched and into the back corner. Holding a one-goal lead, the Lady Buffs shored up the defense for the remainder of the time to secure the victory.
WT travels to Denton to face Texas Woman's on Saturday. The Lady Buffs and the Pioneers kickoff at 1 p.m. at the Pioneer Soccer Park.
