Buffs Play No. 10 Rattlers to Scoreless Draw

SAN ANTONIO – After playing to a 1-1 draw in the season opener, the West Texas A&M men's soccer team played to another draw with the St. Mary's Rattlers. With the scoreless ending, the Buffs move to 3-2-7 overall and 1-0-3 in Lone Star Conference play. The Rattlers remain undefeated as their record moves to 7-0-5 overall, 3-0-1 in the LSC.

The Rattlers pushed the pace out of the gates, attacking the Buffs' back line in the opening minute. St. Mary's Andrick Ferrer sent a shot towards goal, but Asaf Kristal made the save easily. The Rattlers saw another chance come at the seven-and-a-half-minute mark. After a centering pass slipped through the box, Onzi Zorzin flicked a shot toward goal, but Kristal was there to make the save. The Buffs earned their first shot on goal on a free kick outside the box after Tanner Clements drew a foul. On the kick, Kenny Brown's left-footed strike went around the defensive wall and off St. Mary's goalkeeper Andre Schlaefli. Clements almost put the rebound in the back of the net, but Schlaefli scooped the ball up.

Despite scoring opportunities and athletic saves by both sides, the two teams went into halftime scoreless. The Rattlers out-shot the Buffs 9-3 including 5-2 in shots on goal.

The second half got off to a slower start compared to the first half as both programs implemented halftime adjustments. With 18 minutes left, Chris Palomino sent a ball past the St. Mary's back line, but Schaefli cleared the ball away before WT could get a foot on it. In the closing seconds of the game, the Rattlers placed a final shot on goa, but Kristal was there to make the save. The Buffs controlled possession but only mustered a pair of shots in the second half.

WT looks to rebound from back-to-back scoreless draws against Dallas Baptist on Saturday. The Buffs and Patriots start at 1 p.m. on The Pitch.
