Toussaint Drops 36, No. 12 West Texas A&M Falls to Midwestern State

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – West Texas A&M sophomore Zach Toussaint posted a career-high 36 points on Thursday night as the No. 12 Buffs fell to Midwestern State, 100-90, in overtime.  The Mustangs move to 7-12 overall (3-4 LSC) while WT moves to 17-4 (4-3 LSC).

Toussaint became the first player to score 36 points in a single game since David Chavlovich in December of 2016 against Oklahoma City while becoming just the 14th player in program history to reach the milestone.  The Johnsburg, Ill. went for 11-of-19 from the field and 7-for-7 at the free throw line while posting a career high seven 3-pointers.

The Buffs and Mustangs went back-and-forth with a score that saw three lead changes until Zach Toussaint knocked down a shot from the deep to push the Buffs ahead by three, 21-18.  MSU immediately responded with a 7-2 run to take back the lead.

WT chipped at the Mustangs lead to keep the score within single digits as Julius Brown's layup kept it a three-point game, 39-36 at the end of the first half.

The Buffs continued to keep the score within reach as a shot from beyond the arc leveled the score at 59-all at the 11:06 mark. With 14-seconds left of regulation, Zach Toussaint pulled up just steps in front of the half court line and dropped his seventh 3-pointer of the night to send the Buffs into overtime.  Midwestern State collected an 11-2 run to claim the victory, ending WT's eight-game win streak against the Mustangs.

WT finished the night 32-of-69 (46.4%) from the field while going 11-of-27 (40.7%) from beyond the arc and 15-of-24 (62.5%) at the charity stripe to go along with 29 rebounds, eight assists, six steals and three blocks.

The Mustangs went 33-of-60 (55.0%) from the floor, 14-of-26 (53.8%) from the deep and 20-of-25 (80.0%) at the free throw line while collecting 44 rebounds, 20 assists, eight steals and nine blocks. Pierre Sanders and Jermane Carter led MSU's offense with 21 points each.

The Buffs continue their time on the road as they travel down to Dallas for a conference matchup with DBU on Saturday, Jan. 29 with tipoff scheduled for 2 p.m. CT.  Following the game in Dallas, WT will make a quick transition as they set out to take on St. Mary's on Monday, Jan. 31, before facing St. Mary's on Tuesday, Feb. 1.
