Iweze’s Double-Double Lifts No. 12 Buffs over DBU, 72-65

DALLAS, Texas – Freshman Jesse Iweze collected his first collegiate double-double as the No. 12 Buffaloes of West Texas A&M defeated DBU, 72-65, on Saturday afternoon at the Burg Center in Dallas.  WT advances to 18-4 overall and 5-3 in Lone Star Conference action while DBU moves to 13-7 (6-2 LSC). 
 
The Roanoke, Texas product becomes just the third Buff this season to record a double-double after posting a career-high 16 points and 12 rebounds to go along with three blocks, assists and steals. Iweze went 7-for-9 from the floor with a pair of free throws while Zach Toussaint (14) and Julius Brown (13) each reached double figures. 
 
The Buffs broke away with a lead at the 16:29 mark as Iweze followed through with a second-chance layup to ignite a 9-4 run before Brown pulled up with the jump shot to extend the Buffs lead out to seven, 17-10. 
 
Jonas Carlisle added two to the board for WT after knocking down both free throws before pulling up with a jumper for his fourth point of the game.  Larry Wise lobbed a pass over to Kavon Booker for the sophomore to toss up the layup before the Patriots chipped the Buffs lead down to six, 38-32, at the intermission. 
 
DBU collected a 7-0 run to bring the game within two before Hayden Blankley ended the streak with layup after recording the offensive rebound.  Iweze posted his 12th point to the board to push the Buffs lead to double digits, 49-39.  
 
WT shot 45.2 percent (28-of-62) from the floor, 23.8 percent (5-of-21) from the deep and 73.3 percent (11-of-15) at the charity stripe while the Patriots were 43.6 percent (24-of-55) from the field, 20 percent (5-of-25) from the 3-point line and 70.6 percent (12-of-17) for free throws. Carson Hughes was the game's leading scorer with 17 points to go along with seven rebounds, two assists and four steals. 
 
WT returns to action on Monday, Jan. 31, as the Buffs face the St. Edward's Hilltoppers (10-9, 4-5 LSC) at the Recreation and Athletics Center in Austin.  Game time is scheduled is set for 3 p.m. CT.
