Lady Buffs Win 300th Game in Program History in Style

ODESSA, Texas – Hannah Kelley-Lusk and Asha James both scored twice as West Texas A&M picked up its 300th win in program history with a 6-0 victory over UT Permian Basin on Thursday afternoon. The Lady Buffs win their Lone Star Conference opener for the third time in five years to improve to 5-1-0 overall and 20-0-0 all-time against the Falcons.

After a slow opening 10 minutes, Maliyah Mendoza opened the scoring with a right-footed strike in the 12th minute. Reagan Matacale set the goal up as she put her defender on skates before sending a ball into the penalty area where Mendoza one-timed it into the back of the net.

James would double the advantage a minute later on when the sophomore played the offside trap perfectly before beating outrunning the defense and beating the keeper with a left-footed shot.

It was a 3-0 game in the 14th minute when Kelley-Lusk timed her run perfectly to score her fifth of the season. Emily Avila set everything in motion as the junior played a near perfect pass into the path of Kelley-Lusk, who beat the keeper at the far post.

Matacale got her third goal of the season on a powerful right-footed shot in the 60th minute. The Flacons were unable to clear a free kick when Matacale created just enough space on the left side to blast the ball into the back of the net.

Kelley-Lusk would turn provider in the 64th minute as the senior got behind the Falcon defense again before finding a wide-open James at the top of the penalty area for her second of the game and fifth on the season.

Reagan Heelan improved to 5-0-0 on the season after making the start in the goal and making one save before being replaced by Daniela Estrada in the 60th minute.

The Lady Buffs open a three-game home stand on Saturday, Sept. 25, when they host No. 17 Dallas Baptist. Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. at The Pitch.
