OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – Alyx Cordell hit her second home run of the season and
Kyra Lair struck out seven as No. 12 West Texas A&M defeated Texas A&M-Kingsville, 4-2, on Friday afternoon in the quarterfinals of the Lone Star Conference Championships in Oklahoma City, Okla.
The Lady Buffs advance to face No. 4 Oklahoma Christian in the semifinals at 6:30 p.m. today.
After an adventurous first inning, WT opened the scoring in the bottom of the second on a RBI to centerfield from
Julie Guzman.
Gabriella Valforte walked with one out followed by single up the middle by
Madison Johnson.
Sydney Greeson loaded the bases with a single to left field before Guzman drove in the opening run of the game with a blooper to center.
The Javelina's responded with two runs in the top of the third inning, both of them coming on a Loren Kelly triple with one out. WT retook the lead in the bottom half of the inning on Cordell's first home run since March 14.
Shanna McBroom reached base for the second time in the game on a walk before stealing her second bag of the game. TAMUK's Saidi Castillo was able to record two straight outs before
Alyx Cordell sent the 1-2 offering over the fence in left field to make it 3-2. Valforte was up next and walked, coming around to score on a double to left center from Johnson.
The Lady Buffs threatened to add to their lead in the bottom of the sixth with runners on first and third with one out forcing a Javelina pitching change. Beth Montes struck out he next two Lady Buffs to keep the game 4-2 heading into the 7
th.
Lair improved to 18-5 on the season after getting Jackie DeLosSanton to hit into a fielder's choice after the Javelinas had the tying run on first base.
