LAWTON, Okla. – Alyx Cordell drove in seven runs as No. 10 West Texas A&M split with the Aggies of Cameron on Friday night in Lawton, Ola. The Lady Buffs took the first game 8-5 before falling 7-6 in the night cap as their record now stands at 22-8 overall and 10-8 in Lone Star Conference play.
THE BASICS
Game 1 Score: No. 10 West Texas A&M 8, Cameron 5
WT saw themselves down 2-0 after the first inning on a two-run home run from Callie Christensen.
Erica Vessels got a run back in the top of the second with a solo shot, her fourth of the season, to right field.
The Lady Buffs would take a 4-2 lead in the top half of the third inning scoring three runs on one hit and an error.
Shanna McBroom reached base on a bunt single before stealing second followed by a walk and stolen base from
Madison Johnson to put runners on second and third with one out. McBroom came around to score on a fielder's choice from
Alyx Cordell. Johnson would score on another fielder's choice with Cordell plating the third run of the inning on an error.
Cordell would extend the lead in the top of the fourth inning with a three-run double to center field. Three straight singles from Halley Neira, McBroom and
Ruby Salzman loaded the bases with one out. Cordell cleared the bases at the next at-bat to make it 7-2 in favor of WT.
WT would add another run in the top of the 5
th as Vessels scored on Neira's groundout to first. Cameron would cut into the lead in the bottom of the 6
th as Brenna Busby and Mikayla Oaks walked with the bases loaded. The Aggies would try to rally late but
Emilee Wilson got Kylie French to line out to third with runners on first and third.
Kyra Lair improved to 12-4 on the season allowing four runs on three hits in 5 2/3 innings of work. Wilson worked the last 1 1/3 innings allowing one run on two hits.
THE BASICS
Game 2 Score: Cameron 7, No. 10 West Texas A&M 6
The Lady Buffs fell behind in the first inning for the second straight game as the Aggies scored five runs on five hits in the bottom of the first. It was 7-0 by the time the Lady Buffs got their first extra base hit of the game on a double from McBroom in the top of the 6
th. That double started a rally as WT plated three runs, two of those coming on a RBI single up the middle from Cordell to make it 7-3 in favor of the home team.
McBroom would get things going for the Lady Buffs in the top of the seventh with a leadoff single. Salzman would pick up her first hit of the series in the next at-bat with a double to right field to make it 7-3. After advancing to third on a wild pitch, Salzman came around to score as Johnson reached on a fielder's choice. The freshman would come around to score on an error. The Lady Buffs had the tying run on base but were unable to get her home as they dropped to 1-7 on the season when trailing after six innings.
Wilson was saddled with the loss as the redshirt sophomore allowing six runs on seven hits and three walks in 2 1/3 innings.
Halle Lytal went 3 2/3 innings in relief limiting the Aggies to one run on one hit.
